The Flashforge Creator Pro is a desktop 3D printer made by Flashforge, one of the largest 3D printer and filament manufacturers in China.
Based on MakerBot’s open-source Replicator, the Creator Pro endures today as one of the more affordable and capable dual extrusion 3D printers around. Sturdy construction, a heated build plate, and a fully enclosed build chamber allow for multi-material printing of temperature-sensitive materials that would otherwise warp.
It has an active and supportive user base, and it’s also available at a price point accessible to many hobbyists, consumers and small to mid-sized businesses looking for a 3D printer for rapid prototyping.
Read on to find out more about the features and specs of the Flashforge Creator Pro.
The Flashforge Creator Pro is equipped with a versatile dual extruder. Unlike IDEX based systems, where the nozzles move independently from each other on the x-axis, this set-up uses two aligned print heads. While this may allow for quicker dual extrusion prints, due to the decreased traveling time of the print heads, a bit of tinkering may be needed to adjust retraction times, to prevent any oozing from the inactive nozzle.
Coming naturally with the dual extruder though are the possibilities of printing with different materials. Be it PVA (a water-soluble support), or going for multi-material prints; the dual-extrusion system and the closed chamber allow the Creator Pro to print a wide range of materials, including ABS, PLA, HIPS, Flex, T-glass, and composites such as Woodfill, CopperFill, BrassFill, and more.
As mentioned above, the Creator Pro’s ability to handle different materials also resides in its sealed printing chamber. The Flashforge Creator Pro is equipped with a closable door and a removable cover, allowing for temperature-stable printing conditions. This is vital, especially when operating with ABS. It also keeps out any dust and foreign particles, adds an extra safety precaution, helps to muffle the operating sound a bit, and contains some of the fumes when printing ABS.
When printing with PLA, you can open the door and remove the top cover, allowing the air to flow as PLA results tend to be better when the print chamber is well ventilated.
The Creator Pro comes in a stylish and user-friendly design and is ready out of the box.
Unlike Flashforge’s previous models, the Creator Pro is based around a sturdy metal frame. The unibody allows for a more stable vertical movement and generally increases the stability of the moving parts when operating. According to the manufacturer, with the new frame, the device provides up to a 60% increase in print speed compared to the older Flashforge model. It should also increase the print quality due to fewer vibrations, as overall structural stability guarantees a steady high speed and high precision printing.
Flashforge has equipped the Creator Pro with a new and heated build platform, made of a 6.3 mm thick aluminum alloy. This sturdy build plate should provide excellent thermal conductivity to avoid deforming when heated. As the plate is not bendable though, due to its thickness, an included build-plate sticker has to be affixed before the initial start-up.
Unfortunately, the Flashforge Creator Pro does not support auto-bed leveling. It is equipped with a three-point metal leveling system however which should allow for a finer and stable adjustment, compared to the predecessor’s plastic version.
The Creator Pro is an open-source 3D printer and therefore compatible with multiple slicing software like FlashPrint, Simplify3D, ReplicatorG or Cura. Additionally, there are many modifications and upgrades available for the printer; most of them can be 3D printed on the Creator Pro itself. Such as (better) spool holders or a filament tube. There is a collection on Thingiverse available.
