With Creality dipping its toes in the messy world of desktop resin 3D printing with machines such as its LD-002R and the recent LD-002H, it was high time for the company to help its users out with a station for neater post-print processing.
It is the first, harsh lesson of resin printing that post-processing can be rather messy and downright tedious, despite the jaw-droppingly detailed prints you get.
Enter washing and curing machines. Combining both washing and curing functionalities into one machine, these machines can take a lot of dirty work off your hands (literally).
The UW-01 is Creality’s rendition of the much-welcomed little helper. At $150, it’s pretty competitively priced. Join us as we take a look beyond the price, and delve a little deeper into the features and specs to see if it is up to the task or a complete wash (pun intended).
The UW-01 is Creality’s version of a combined washing and curing machine. To wash your freshly finished, gunky, resin-covered prints, you place your finished model in the designated container filled with a cleaning agent (IPA or water) and start the washing process.
If you own one of Creality’s resin 3D printers, the LD-002R or LD-002H, you have the additional advantage of being able to place the build plate of these printers directly on the UW-01’s mount. The holder’s height is adjustable so that the container does not have to be filled to the brim and allows you to position your prints fully submerged in the cleaning solution.
If you plan to use this with a third-party printer, no problem – place your models in the provided basket, which prevents your prints from meeting a grizzly end on contact with the high-speed propeller at the bottom of the container. The turbine does have a safety guard on top of it, but you wouldn’t want to take any chances.
In Wash mode, the UW-01 houses a volume of 170 x 120 x 160 mm, which should be more than enough for any print plate’s worth of parts from today’s crop of mid-size desktop resin printers – think Creality’s LD-series printers or the Elegoo Mars series of printers.
After the cleaning process, you can close the airtight container and keep it stowed for the next wash. This should prevent the stench of IPA from propagating in your cleaning area when the cleaning cycle is not in use. Regardless, we still recommend using it in a well-ventilated area.
Curing is done by an array of 385 nm and 405nm wavelength UV LEDs and a rotating table.
Arranged in a tall stripe, the LEDs are located on the machine’s spine, at the back. The rotating table and its reflecting surface mean the model you intend to cure gets hit by UV light from all sides. The maximum curing volume is Ø 165 x 200 mm.
The machine’s operation appears to simple. With the touch buttons on the machine’s front, you can switch between the two operation modes. The user interface lets you choose between three different washing speeds, depending on your model’s delicacy, and set a timer all the way up to 90 minutes. A simple display to the left of the controls gives the time remaining and an indicator of the currently selected mode.
The lid is also equipped with a safety function that automatically switches off the UV lights when you remove the cover, a useful precaution against accidental exposure to the UV light.
The Creality UW-01 currently sells for ~$150, which is about level with similar-sized and -specced machines from competitive manufacturers such as Elegoo and Anycubic. The functions are largely the same, so the decision more or less comes down to your preference of color for the UV-blocking lid.
There are, from time to time, bundle deals that throw the UW-01 in with a 3D printer. Creality, for example, often offers its LD-002H and the UW-01 – at the time of writing this piece you can snag both for $349, which is effectively knocking $60 off the price of the UW-01.
The UW-01 has been around since early 2021, and a few reviews of it have already surfaced on YouTube. The overall consensus is positive, with a small modding scene already emerging to improve the machine’s usability with other brands’ 3D printers – this plate adapter for Elegoo printers, for example. Some users have mentioned the buttons are a bit stiff.
You may also be interested in the following similar machines.
The Mercury Plus is Elegoo’s version of a wash and cure machine. It provides the same 2-in-1 function as Creality’s UW-01, but with a slightly smaller volume – 125 x 85 x 160 mm when washing and Ø 140 x 165 mm when curing. Pricewise it’s just south of the UW-01 at~$120.
The Phrozen Cure Luna is one of the largest UV post-processing machines for hobbyists. At 220 x 220 x 270 mm, it’s chamber is more accommodating to the large-format resin printers we’ve seen released in recent months.
It does not feature a washing function, so you will need an extra bucket of IPA to swirl your prints around in first, but at $250, it’s worth considering if you plan to print – and cure – big.
