Every Friday, we review a 3D printing filament or resin. This week‘s filament is Fillamentum’s “Vertigo Starlight” Extrafill PLA filament.

What‘s Special?

The Czech Republic-based company Fillamentum offers a successful, affordable Extrafill series – PLA or ABS with the occasional extra bling. Currently, there are 48 PLA color variations and 18 ABS versions available, ranging from the popular “Rapunzel Silver”, “Gold Happens”, “Orange Orange” to the new “Vertigo Starlight ” – which we are reviewing here.

The material, available in 1.75 or 3mm diameter, prints with the same properties as regular PLA or ABS does. Fillamentum recommends using a 0,5 mm nozzle.

The price for a 750g-spool is around $30 (€26), which is a relatively low price for PLA.

Fillamentum’s "Vertigo Starlight" from the Extrafill series has a beautiful dark blue tint - and some sparkling bits in it. Think of a starry night sky and you’ll get the idea.

The Verdict

Image of Fillamentum Vertigo Starlight Review: The Verdict

We tested the filament on a Prusa i3 MK3. Our spool came in recycled cardboard; with a re-sealable plastic bag plus a desiccant for keeping the material dry.

The “jolly 3D printer torture test” Benchy turned out fine overall. We didn’t encounter any problems while printing. We found nearly no stringing and no visible problems.

Under the microscope, you can see a good layer adhesion and the reflection of sparkly bits that make the material shine.

The Benchy’s chimney also turned out pretty much perfect.

Overall, the color of the prints was consistent. We didn’t encounter notable stringing, blobs, warping, or generally problematic behavior.

After the benchy, we printed two more models, the first one being Tush – the Ultimate Spool holder. The two parts weren’t difficult to 3D print, and the bearings fitted nicely.

Also, the Bakercube turned out to be excellent. The support structures came out extremely easy without leaving any residue.

All3DP’s Verdict

We have to admit: It’s a joy to print with Fillamentum Extrafill PLA, and the Vertigo Starlight makes no exception.

Overall, the material makes a classy impression. The color is a deep dark blue that contrasts nicely with the silver inclusions. Luckily, Fillamentum doesn’t overdo it by adding too much “bling” to the PLA – it‘s just the occasional sparkle here and there.

“Classy” is the word that comes to mind.

How we Review

Friday is All3DP’s “Filament Friday”, where we take a spool of filament for a short test ride.

Every spool is brand new and unopened.

First, we 3D print a Benchy and check for any inconsistencies. Then we print one or two other 3D printables – and provide you with the results. Slicing is done in the latest version of Cura, unless noted otherwise. The prints aren’t post-processed in any way; we just remove the support structures.

As for the printing settings, we take temperature and speed recommendations directly from the manufacturer. If the manufacturer offers a range, we go for the arithmetic middle. So if the manufacturer offers a range from 180-220 degree Celsius, we will set the printer for 200 degree Celsius (unless noted otherwise).

As a printer, we use a Prusa i3 Mk3 for 1,75 mm filament and a Lulzbot TAZ 6 for 2,85mm filament diameter.

Of course, every spool is different. Even within a filament range, quality may vary. We‘re also aware that tweaking other settings like retraction can be the gap between a successful and a failed print. So if you own a spool of that filament, we would love to hear from you. Any interesting experiences? How did your prints turn out? Please feel free to add to the comments section.
