The company Full Spectrum Laser (FSL) produces several types of fabrication equipment including 3D printers and laser engravers, all ranging from the hobby to professional level. And the FSL Muse is another contender in the hobby laser market, a machine packing a 40W laser and a water-cooled CO2 laser, with an external cooling unit included.
This happens to be Full Spectrum Laser’s most entry-level product at $5000, packing just enough to satisfy a hobby user. Let’s break it down in this spec breakdown.
The 40W laser with a resolution of 1000 dpi is standard for hobby-grade machines like this one – it’s claimed by the manufacturer to be capable of cutting and engraving quarter-inch wood or acrylic, and leather, among others. And if you’ve got a more advanced use case, you can even engrave steel or glass with this laser. All in all, it’s a pretty standard package at this price point – nothing new here.
Touch controls are a reasonable expectation for $5000, and the Muse has got it. In addition, you can rest assured that you won’t have to get anywhere near an active laser as it’s getting fired up because this machine is controlled via a web-based software called RetinaEngrave. There’s not much need for guesswork, either, with the onboard camera tucked away in the ‘sturdy metal case design’ of the Muse.
Included in the standard package is a water cooling unit for cooling the CO2 laser directly via a series of tubes. It’s a standard feature among these machines, but it’s something to keep in mind when planning to place this machine in a studio or home office. After all, you’ll also need to make space for an external water pump unit near the machine. Speaking of placement, you’ll also want to place the Muse near a large, open window to dissipate fumes if you go for the baseline configuration without the upgraded exhaust system.
