It isn’t everyday that a whole new company comes along with a whole new 3D printer, but that’s exactly what’s happening here with the Kywoo Tycoon. Kywoo’s project recently reached the 100% funded threshold over on Kickstarter, with deliveries expected to begin shortly after we step into 2021.

As this ship seems just about ready to set sail, we thought we’d take a look at what this printer offers. First impressions are pretty good, thanks to its design. You have to say it has an eye-catching, neatly arranged face for a 3D printer. Not just for looks apparently, Kywoo says its double Z- and Y-axis structure promises greater stability too – up to 30% greater in fact.

Then there are some tech goodies. An auto-leveling print bed, 32-bit motherboard, TMC2208 steppers, WiFi connectivity, a lovely looking color touchscreen UI with support for multiple languages, and direct-drive extrusion forming part of a very tidily packaged hot end.

All aboard the good ship Tycoon, then. Let’s see what this thing has got going for it.

The Tycoon's Bed (Source: All3DP)

Print Volume

We’re looking at a 240 x 240 x 240 mm build volume on the Kywoo Tycoon, a tidy 24 cubic centimeters. For reference, that’s 20 mm better than a similarly priced Creality Ender 3 Pro, though 10 worse off on the Z.

Auto-Leveling Print Bed

Automatic bed leveling is nice, isn’t it? It’s one less thing to worry about, and Kywoo says it’ll be using its own all-metal design for the leveling mechanism. We don’t know much more than that just yet, but we can say it’ll almost certainly be a touch sensor of some description.

The basis for this is that Kywoo says you can switch out your print bed for alternative materials should you wish, and a contact sensor is necessary for auto-leveling to work with a glass bed.

The print bed will climb up to 110 ℃  at its hottest, and while we’re on the topic of heat, the nozzle tops out at 260 ℃, plenty hot enough to deal with the majority of filaments. The confirmed filament compatibility so far lists PLA, PETG, TPU, TPE, and ABS.

Direct Drive Extrusion

Speaking of filaments, the Kywoo Tycoon uses a direct drive extruder, possibly giving it a slight advantage when it comes to the more flexible filaments. The filament itself feeds directly into the hot end, forming part of a very neatly packed hot end.

Print Head

This is a particularly interesting part of the Tycoon. Kywoo fuses the extruder block and heat sink. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it is a bit unusual, and it’s a very tidy arrangement. Kywoo says it’ll improve performance and reduce wear. Of course, that remains to be seen. For now, we’re quite taken with the red manual rotary filament feed wheel. Pretty.

Showing the folks behind Kywoo as 3D printer users themselves is the ability to change the nozzle with just one wrench. No precarious gripping of the heater block necessary.

Color Touchscreen

Another cool touch is the sharp-looking color touchscreen on the “box” of the Tycoon. Kywoo says it’s all nice and responsive and easy to use, and it comes with nine different languages built into it so you can switch to the one that suits you the best.

Adjustable Filament Rack

This could go either way, but the adjustable filament rack on the Tycoon has us a little concerned, largely due to the fact it looks a lot like the one on the Artillery Sidewinder X1, and that was an uncomfortable sensation in the derrière.

Time will tell, it could be a pretty good filament rack, but there’s a reason you don’t see many in this style…

Connectivity

Promising a reliable WiFi connection, starting prints should be as easy as a few clicks from Cura. That’s about as far as the benefits of this particular WiFi connection goes, but Kywoo also says that the Tycoon will ship with compatibility for both SD and microSD cards without the need for an adapter. Handy.

32-Bit Board

Toting silent stepper motor drivers and the headroom for upgrades that a 32-bit board comes with, the Tycoon should be a viable long-term option, open to upgrading further down the road.

Price

The Kywoo Tycoon (Source: All3DP)

Currently, you can back the Kywoo Tycoon project for $279 over on the Kickstarter page at the “Flash Sale” price. Apparently, that’s a 37% discount, but there are so many slots left on that page that we can’t see this price changing anytime soon. Do keep in mind that this is a Kickstarter. Usual warnings apply – only put in money you’re comfortable with the possibility of losing, or not seeing anything in return for a long time. Kickstarter shouldn’t be treated like a shop; delays occur, and really you’re getting the first wave of a new product, warts and all.

The business end (Source: All3DP)

Kywoo has said that it expects deliveries to begin just after the new year, 2021, and that’s about all we know so far.

If things go well for Kywoo, it looks like they plan to launch a series of printers. There’s already a Tycoon “Max” featuring a larger build volume on the Kickstarter page and, among the ideas floated in a document Kywoo sent to All3DP, enclosed and dual-extruder variants.
