Monoprice has quite the track record in the 3D printing community. Its well-loved Select Mini was a big deal for a while in the FDM world, and now this MP Mini SLA LCD resin printer (not to be confused with the Monoprice Mini resin printer) aims to make a splash in the resin world.
It wasn’t too long ago that the only worthwhile resin printer a consumer could acquire was made by Formlabs. These machines were tried and true but would leave you with a hole in your wallet that looked like $3,000 had just gone missing. After a while, resin printers became more affordable and common — and this machine is a prime specimen in this age of affordable resin hardware that combines functionality and affordability.
Packing a 2K LCD screen, wireless connectivity, and automatic platform leveling in a sub-$300 package, the MP Mini appears to continue the legacy of Monoprice’s game-changing FDM offering on the surface. But do the specs hold up under close examination? Let’s review them to find out.
The LCD curing screen has a relatively sharp resolution considering it just covers a 118 x 65 mm print area, which means print resolution on this machine should be standard for this price point. Its maximum resolution of 0.05 mm is more than enough for most hobbyists and is a good deal at this price point.
Note that this machine uses an LCD array, not a laser and mirrors, to cure the resin and build it into a part. This means that, depending on the model, cure times can be different compared to an SLA machine printing the same model.
This machine continues to impress with a rare feature for this price range: An auto-leveling build platform. At the start of every print, the platform is loosened then lowered slowly against the base of the curing vat to ensure it’s parallel, then the platform orientation is fixed in place to maintain the perfect alignment.
This feature will certainly save beginners some hassle, especially since the bed leveling process requires finesse and a certain level of experience with resin printing. This way, it’s that much easier to just get printing. We’re surprised this is included for its price, but we certainly appreciate it (and hope it works).
In addition to a proprietary “Web UI”, the MP Mini is also compatible with Creation Workshop and Print Studio, which means you’re not as limited in terms of software compared to other machines in this price range. Otherwise, slicing and model preparation is fairly standard for this machine — cure times are standard, as long as you don’t use the wrong type of resin, and print speed is average, too.
The MP Mini has a hidden trick once you start printing: It allows you to store multiple profiles on the machine itself to quickly change cure times, lift height, and other printing parameters. This is useful when testing out resins or simply to change the type of print job, because the entire model needn’t be re-sliced on a computer.
