Desktop vacuum formers can be enormously useful devices for people working in creative industries who need to create anything from models and prototypes to molds and packaging. There isn’t a great number of them about, though.

Taiwanese start-up My Yard is currently kickstarting a new machine that fits the bill, raising over $200,000 on the famous give-me-money-please-platform. It’s called the Formart 2, and it sounds pretty good, promising “industrial-level heating” and “unique suction control technology” as well as automatic plastic sheet detection. Alright, then.

Apart from raising big money on Kickstarter, the My Yard Formart 2 will be looking to outgun the recently reviewed segment favorite, Mayku Formbox, and the one or two other similar machines out there that struggle to get attention from people desperate for something that really sucks the heck out of plastic sheets.

We took a look at its specs to see if it really sucks.

Features

Industrial Level Heating Technology

Sadly not a giant furnace, which is a shame, instead the Formart 2 uses quartz-encased carbon fiber heating tubes, promising the most evenly distributed heating surface on any desktop-grade machine and being three times more powerful than the competition – the competition here being almost certainly the Mayku Formbox. Apart from having triple the power, My Yard also boasts an alleged 90% thermal efficiency as well as triple the lifespan. Well, if all that doesn’t sound good, what does.

The highest you can dial these sporty little crystal tubes up to is 230°C – quite toasty and well suited to handle a wide range of plastic sheet materials.

A Good Range of Plastic Sheet Materials

Actually, “good” might be underselling it a bit because, according to My Yard, the Formart 2 can handle 16 different types of thermoplastic sheets. Have a glance at the tech specs further below to see the full list; it would break the mold here (pun intended).  Let it be said, it is the whole range of consumer materials such as PLA, ABS, PETG, and then some.

What’s more, the machine also comes with a thermoplastic database. Whether you are using stock or third-party material, the Formart 2 can yield repeatable results. Additionally, you can store up to five custom user settings. And there’s even a system for auto-detecting the plastic sheets you’re using via QR codes. Currently, there are four types of sheets available from My Yard that hold these codes.

The machine can handle sheets with different thicknesses between 0.3 and 3.0 mm and even has different selectable heating modes. Based on the characteristics and thickness of the plastic, you can configure the appropriate heating curves – linear, parabolic, or stepped.

Spacious Sucking Zone

With a maximum of 500 x 300 mm worth of sucking space, there’s a lot of room for your projects. The draw length of the suction effect is stated at 160 mm, which means you should be able to get some pretty big and deep molds from the Formart 2. Exciting news for any maker whose projects tend to be restricted by space.

The other very cool thing about the suction bed is that it is adjustable in its size. So you can go about and shrink the to-be-vacuumed area to your job-specific measurements, saving waste and money. My Yard provides four different sizes of plastic sheets, ranging from 500 x 300 mm to 300 x 200 mm.

Industrial Pump Suction

Yeaaaah, now we’re talking. Unlike most of its competition, the Formart 2 doesn’t need a vacuum cleaner to get sucking on your chosen objects, as it is said to have industrial pumps inside capable of providing “state of the art” suction of up to 660 mmHg (~90 kPa).

In addition, the Formart 2 also has three “smart” suction modes, providing ease-of-use especially for beginners and first-time users.

Dehumidifying Function

The Formart 2 also comes with a dehumidifying function – according to the manufacturer, a novelty in the sector. Essentially the machine evaporates the trapped moisture inside the thermoplastic sheets before vacuuming, promising drastic improvements to the forming quality as well as reducing waste material due to failed or non-accurate attempts.

Automatic Mold Releasing

This nifty little device is straightforward. It can blow a bit of air back the opposite way to release your mold from the object it has just formed around, meaning you don’t have to try and prize something open with a knife or ruin a mold just trying to get the thing out again. Also, it won’t push it off too soon either, as the cooling fans will cool your plastic first before the valve pushes the mold back off.

Quick Adjustable Clamp Frame Lock

Another one of those little things that goes a long way to making life easier if it works as advertised is the quick locking system for adjusting the Formart 2. It allows you to adjust the frame’s height with just a turn of the wrist and should prove unfiddly, simple, and speedy.

Release Date & Availability

For the time being, it isn’t certain exactly when you’ll be able to get your hands on a My Yard Formart 2. The Formart 2 is currently available for backing on Kickstarter, and you ought to know what that means by now: This isn’t a final product, it isn’t certain to ever be released, and delays are likely – all that jazz.

As of March 10, 2021, My Yard posted on the Kickstarter that the device is currently in the certifications process, and shipping is expected to begin in September 2021. It says you’re pre-ordering a product, but really that’s not how Kickstarter works. We would advise you to only put in money you’d be happy to lose with nothing to show for it because there’s always the chance that’s exactly what will happen. Although the campaign looks quite promising, not gonna lie.

Price

The Speaking of putting money in, you’ll need a fair bit here. At the time of writing, you can “pre-order” a Formart 2 for the reduced price of $1,829. According to the Kickstarter information, the full price will be $2,999 when the product is released.

This is a lot of money, especially given competitors retail for a lot less, so this machine will have to really wow to justify that price tag. For the time being, it’s best to take reviews from influencers with a sizeable pinch of salt.

Similar Machines

We’ve only gone hands-on with one other desktop vacuum former so far, and there aren’t many alternatives out there, so here’s where we’d point you.

Mayku Formbox

Probably the only other machine you might want to consider, the Mayku Formbox is far from perfect, but it will allow you to create molds and costs around a sixth of the price of a full-price Formart 2. However, you’ll need a vacuum cleaner for it to do anything at all and has much less space on its suction bed.
