Canadian startup PrintDry made a splash back in 2016 when it released its relatively inexpensive filament dryer via Kickstarter.
Its goal was to make printing with tricky, hygroscopic materials like ABS, PETG, PVA, nylon, and flexibles a surer thing. And, though it wasn’t the only option to toast your filament (if you’ve ever put filament in your oven, you know what we’re talking about), the product was made specifically for this purpose and was easy and safe to use.
But, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t without its flaws and so the company came back with a new and improved product, the PrintDry Filament Dryer 2.0, which launched on Kickstarter and raised about $37,000 from 271 backers.
So, does this dryer mop up the mistakes of its predecessor? Is it the tool you need on your workbench? Read on as we review its specs.
Features
While its predecessor had fairly unimpressive looks – it resembled a hacked food dehydrator and worked in roughly the same way – the 2.0 has a smidge more style to it. Here’s a look at its features.
DIGITAL DISPLAY
With a display at the front of the machine, it’s easy to adjust the temperature between five options: 35ºC, 45ºC, 55ºC, 65ºC, and 75ºC. There is also a timer option that can be set to a maximum of 48 hours.
TWO SPOOL CAPACITY
Like its predecessor, this dryer can wick moisture out of two filament spools at the same time so you don’t have to wait around after one spool’s used up.
One major difference is that instead of having the spools laying horizontally on top of one another, the 2.0 has both mounted vertically.
SPOOL ADAPTERS
Since filament spools come in all different sizes, there’s not really a one-size-fits-all option when it comes to spool holders. That’s why the PrintDry Filament Dryer 2.0 comes with two metal shafts, four big spool adapters, and four small spool adapters.
These spool adapters should help mitigate this problem so all your spools (so long as their outside diameter isn’t bigger than 200 mm) can fit inside of it properly. (If they’re bigger than that though there’s an accessory you can buy separately so they’ll fit, but more on that below.)
DRYING TIME
As mentioned, the machine has a timer you can set to dry spools for up to 48 hours. If the 2.0 is anything like its predecessor, drying times will range from about two hours for ABS and PETG to over 12 hours for materials like nylon.
ADJUSTABLE TEMPERATURE
Like a rotisserie chicken, you can roast your filament at the perfect temperature to get the best results. Keep your filament in a balmy 35 °C up to a scorching 75 °C.
OTHER ACCESSORIES
The new design also allows for ways to accessorize or customize your dryer. You can add a large spool kit to it to handle spools of up to 5 kg or you can also get an additional chamber kit to dry three or more 1 kg spools at the same time.
