Sunlu, long known as merely a filament manufacturer, seems to be expanding its product offerings.

Its first venture into 3D printers is the Sunlu S8, a budget-friendly large-format machine that costs roughly $330 depending on where you purchase it from.

With its large build volume of 310 x 310 x 400 mm, it’s easy to make comparisons to machines in Creality’s CR-10 series. But, though the S8 is in a similar price range to the CR-10S, for example, it’s not a carbon copy.

For one thing, it has its electronics box under the machine, rather than in a separate compartment on the side, a feature that reduces the printer’s footprint substantially.

But comparisons to Creality aside, how does the Sunlu S8 stand up against other more established machines in the same price range with similar features? We haven’t gone hands-on with the S8, but we’ve pored over the features to help you determine if it’s worth your money. Read on as we review its specs.

Features

Like most printers in its price range, you can expect the following features:

Large Build Volume

With its generous 310 x 310 x 400 mm build volume, the S8 gives you just about all the space you need for prints from large to small.

Filament Run-Out Detection

When printing large objects on a printer of this size, the last thing you want is to overestimate the amount of filament you have and wind up with a failed print because your spool ran out. This shouldn’t be an issue with the S8 though, because it comes with a filament sensor. We have seen complaints among users that the filament sensor is poorly placed though, so this may be something to consider.

Power Loss Resume Function

Similarly to filament run-out detection, being able to restart a print from where it was cut off during a power outage is a key tool to ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

Potential Pitfalls

Some users have found the power plug and switch (located behind the electronics box under the printer) to be tricky to get to and very inconveniently placed. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it is something to take note of. Users have also found the spool holder to be less than ideal, but there are some easy mods you can print yourself to get around that.
