Bigger Is Better!

CNC routers are great tools for workshops of any size. They come in a range of options, from small desktop tools to large, free-standing machines, and even handheld routers (for a more portable solution).

Here, we’ve focused on some of the best 4×8 CNC routers on the market. As you might be able to guess from the name, 4×8 routers have a workspace of 4′ wide and 8′ long. 4×8 is a standard panel size, and a router that matches your material size requires far less preparation, so you’ll be making your first cuts in no time.

All but one of the routers we’ve featured are 4×8, but we also considered a few extra factors in putting together our list: All of the options below have spare parts readily available to purchase, and most of them incorporate an easy-to-use work-holding system.

We also capped our price range at around the $20,000 mark, though there are a few good options for a fair bit less. The routers we’ve selected range from entry-level models, such as the MakerMade M2, to relatively high-end machines such as the Stinger Series III. To help you navigate the prices, we’ve listed everything from least to most expensive.

So, now you know what you’re in for, let’s get to the list!

MakerMade M2

The MakerMade M2 is the cheapest router on this list, but don’t let its price fool you. This non-conventional CNC essentially hangs from a wooden backboard and moves across it using a system of pulleys and chains. The vertical arrangement means the footprint of the machine is much smaller than any other option on our list, which could be an advantage if you’re working on large projects in a small space!

One drawback is that you have to provide the spindle motor yourself, but that shouldn’t be too much trouble as you can add a handheld router for that.

For an even cheaper option, MakerMade also still offers the Original Maslow for about half the price of the M2.

  • Price: From $1,200
  • Features: Built-in dust collection, all-metal Z-axis assembly, repeatability within 1 mm

Bonus: Shaper Origin

The Shaper Origin can cut on any work surface

The Shaper Origin is a handheld CNC router that allows you to do projects on practically any scale.

The way it works is a little complicated, but the gist of it is that the onboard camera scans the work area (as defined by some special tape). After this, you simply move the Shaper Origin over the area and it automatically makes adjustments as you go.

To make it a little closer to the rest of these routers, you can also purchase the corresponding workstation. It might not be a conventional CNC router, but it’s an affordable option that can certainly cut a 4×8 panel, and it thereby earns its place on this list!

  • Price: $2,500
  • Features: Wi-Fi for file transfers and updates, automatic cut correction, works on almost every surface
