Bearded Printer is a designer who’s created a variety of functional and decorative models, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’re featuring him in this week’s Designer Spotlight. After all, his models have been downloaded over 107,000 times from Printables alone, and, well, how cute is this articulated dragon?

If you’re looking for further proof of how great his designs are, there’s plenty of video evidence to nudge you in the right direction. Let’s learn a bit more about the creative mind behind these dazzling ideas!

Q&A

All3DP: Tell us a little about yourself – what’s your background?

Bearded Printer: I originally got a 3D printer because of the capability of being able to design and fabricate anything I needed for building things. I didn’t get enthusiastic about design until toward the end of 2023, when I moved on from using Tinkercad to using Autodesk Fusion.

How do you get the ideas for your designs?

I get my inspiration from all sorts of places! Sometimes I’ll see a kit from Bambu Lab and ideas will pop into my head. Sometimes my wife will say something or I’ll even see another designer come out with something amazing, and it’ll make me want to design something.

How much does the technical side of 3D printing (e.g. supports, a design that requires assembly or one that’s printable in one piece) come into play when you’re designing? Or is your designing entirely independent from 3D printing and you later figure out how they work together best?

3D printing constraints play a major role when I design! Supports, assembly, and orientation are always at the forefront of my mind before I even start designing something new. Although I don’t always succeed in designing something that doesn’t need supports, I try my best.

Of all the things you’ve created, which are you most fond of and why?

I’m usually most fond of my most recent designs. However, I’ve grown quite fond of the house lamps I’ve designed recently, like my Cozy Cabin.

If you could step back in time and give yourself some advice from the beginning, what would it be?

It would definitely be CAD advice. I’d tell myself to not do the stupid things that caused me so many headaches in the past.
