Gloomhaven is a well-loved game, and it’s also something of a brick to deal with. Featuring detailed gameplay and a long and involved story, Gloomhaven straddles the line between roleplaying game and board game when it comes to the tabletop experience.
Gloomhaven features hundreds of cards, tokens, and pieces. They’re all clear examples of character growth and careful story reveals. The variety of monsters and creatures is beyond what plenty of other games have to offer, with multiple expansions even when strictly dealing with the base version. And Jaws of the Lion, Forgotten Circles, and other expansion material can make the game even broader and impressive.
As a result, upgrading the game by printing miniatures and other designs has become something of a pastime.
In this article, we’ll look at our top picks for websites that offer Gloomhaven and related STL files that you can 3D print at home. If your printer’s not up to standards or you just want to play, with Craftcloud you can upload the file, select the technology, materials, and manufacturer, and wait for the prints to be delivered while setting things up.
Gloomhaven is a big game with a lot of different parts. These can be enjoyed out of the box or enhanced.
Such enhancements can be as basic as inserts to keep pieces in place in the box. Or, you can widen the scope by adding aids and organizers, miniatures to represent antagonists, and more.
With so many file repositories out there, it’s easy to become overwhelmed or look for things without knowing if anything fits your needs. Finding the right items is key, as is getting a site that one can operate well.
For each of the sites that we’ve included, we’re mentioning three aspects that you’re likely to want to know right away:
Thingiverse is a well-known site among 3D printing aficionados. It includes a little bit of everything, having existed for a long time as an aggregate of files for use by all sorts of printers and machines.
Simply searching “Gloomhaven” will produce around 1,400 results, but terms for individual desired pieces or units (“zombie”, “skeleton”, “bones”, “drake”) will help either narrow down the search or yield many more options – some of which may be way off base.
With a large variety of files and every item being free, it’s a popular source. While one can just click to download the files, the batch download function often doesn’t work, forcing individual file downloads.
To get started, the Gloomhaven dashboard created by richifever is a multipart design to help players keep track of character-related materials. While lacking a dedicated “items” slot, it’s still easily one of the most useful for organizing your game.
Printables is a relatively new site, having transformed from the PrusaPrinters database of printable files.
A site that caters to all areas, the gaming material on it won’t always center on miniatures, though plenty are featured, as are a delightful number of other supplements. Once again, Gloomhaven will produce around 400 search results, but useful terms related to fantasy terminology (“skeleton”, “dragon”, “orc”) will significantly bump the number.
All the files on the site are free and can be downloaded individually or as groups on a page, although a few will point you to Patreon or paid sites for additional varieties.
VirtuallyJason‘s Living Bones Miniatures feature the odd multi-armed look standard to Gloomhaven, fitting the game perfectly.
MyMiniFactory is… exactly what the name implies.
A site specializing in miniatures and 3D printing, the designs are common and almost universally well done. While some files have a price tag, others are free. Searching “Gloomhaven” as a term will produce over 200 purchasable designs and more than 450 free files. Other fantasy-related terms like “bandit” and “skeleton” will similarly produce hundreds – if not thousands – of nice miniatures and pieces.
Linkitch‘s coins are a very nice inclusion made available specifically for Gloomhaven. While the tokens in the box are effective, print them with metal filament for maximum effect. The slight sculpted distortions certainly provide a realistic feel one needs in a fantasy game.
Cults is a beloved site in the 3D printing world.
Like many, it includes several different price points from “Free” into the stratosphere. Searching “Gloomhaven” can produce almost 400 results, and “board game upgrade” will produce material both useful and not. Similarly, fantasy terms like “skeleton”, “warrior”, “orc”, or “dragon” will once again show a wider variety of results.
Worthy of mention is MadcapMiniatures‘ magnet-powered door, which looks appropriate while also seeming to act as a functional door in the game. For visuals, it may just be a door, but it can easily delight players who get to use it.
Patreon was created to allow fans and supporters to provide funding directly to those producing something they appreciate. This has included gaming materials for products like Gloomhaven from early on.
The search function for Patreon is, unfortunately, not great. Even so, looking up “Gloomhaven” and “miniatures” will both show a number of interesting results. Unlike many other sites, long-term subscription is required to get files from Patreon. Each Patreon campaign has different ways of doling files out to their patrons, and as a result, understanding the process can be difficult even for someone who has backed one group or artist when moving to another.
Good Patreon accounts to look at include Epic Adventure Miniatures, which features a variety of fun pieces, including some specially designed for Gloomhaven. Not everything works fantastically, but a wide variety of what comes out will inspire.
Gambody is one of the smaller sites on this list, but one that is growing rapidly. While individual designs have price tags in the double digits, bundles are available for higher prices. Even if a wide variety of material with familiar designs are featured, “Gloomhaven” returns zero results.
More common fantasy terms like “undead” and “barbarian” will lead to appropriate designs. Use is overall clear, with a login and payment required almost universally.
An especially interesting design comes from Deathwing the Destroyer model by Docik, which works well as the Elder Drake in Gloomhaven. While not an exact match for the art, the look is quite similar, and the overall disturbing and familiar creature will threaten well on the tabletop.
Loot Studios is another oddity on this list. While not releasing material labeled “Gloomhaven”, some pieces nonetheless fit with the game.
Much like Patreon, Loot Studios requires a subscription to get the most out of it. That said, between the free sample miniatures such as the Headsplitter and existing bundles, it’s entirely possible to find something useful for Gloomhaven without it being specifically created for it. The site is straightforward to use, although login is required and reminders about becoming a subscriber are frequent.
The Buried Tomb bundle will be of particular interest to Gloomhaven players, as well as Panshaw Under Seige. While these might be the most obviously useful, miniatures can also be found in any “Fantasy” bundle.
CGTrader is a well-known site for designs for printing or digital use. This distinction is often important when selecting files, as not every model works well physically.
Searching for Gloomhaven itself will produce just two dozen results, while terms related to fantasy creatures like “skeleton” or “dragon” offer more options. It should be noted that the latter terms will, of course, need to be checked to see if the physical printing will create an issue. Additionally, keep costs in mind. While there are free minis on the site, bundles and even individual models can be quite pricey (such as the ∼$1,300 Daruk the Champion V-2). Overall, the search and download processes on the site are easy. However, filtering searches and payment can add complicated details.
More complex bundles include crossances‘ Board game bundle, which contains a host of materials for a premium. Most of the major units in Gloomhaven can be represented by something in this set, but for those looking for specific expansions, even if CGTrader doesn’t have what they want, they’ll still inspire ideas.
Pinshape is another site with a wide variety of miniatures, game aids, and completely unrelated material.
“Gloomhaven” produces a fewer than 10 results, but fantasy terms like “skeleton” and “dragon” will make it easier to find more options. The search is fairly intuitive, and items specific to Gloomhaven range in cost from free to ∼$7. A careful search will turn up something different, although not as much as on some sites.
The monster base designed by boggers can be an especially useful design when setting up. If you like 2D art pieces, these bases will be a nice upgrade on the originals that came with the game. Given how heavy the game already is, those traveling with it should consider them a serious option for that reason alone.
Hero Forge is a well-known site in gaming circles, although the usefulness of the site to Gloomhaven fans may be slightly less obvious.
Building a new monster helps a lot, as do mixing and matching to create something particular to the experience with Gloomhaven, such as reversing the gender of a player character to match the desires of the person in control. The host of options and payment requirements will be the biggest barriers for many, but overall the interaction is pretty direct.
Similarly, it can be great for providing replacement “character” minis for gamers who don’t like to play with the look in the box. Human bandits, vermlings, and inox can all be built using human, ratfolk or fox people, and half-demon templates, respectively. Skeletons with an added arm can easily be used as living bones, zombies as living corpses, and more. It’s just a matter of getting creative.
There is quite a learning curve for some of the options on character creation, but the vermling equivalent created in only seconds should make the usefulness clear.
