Rigged models are those that contain a digital “skeleton”, allowing them to be manipulated and posed.
Intuitively, you might think that they’re limited to animated characters that have physical movements, but rigged models can actually be anything with an internal skeleton (or structure) that defines its movements. For example, a 3D model of a car can be “rigged” to allow the doors and trunk to open and close. Nevertheless, many rigged models are indeed characters of some kind, as they are the most obvious candidates for posing.
The question is, where do you find good rigged models? No one likes having to start from scratch if they don’t have to. In this article, we list 10 of our favorite sites for rigged models, plus one that allows you to make your own!
In making our selections, we considered a few important aspects:
CGTrader is a great place to find rigged models because it has a good combination of search functions, including the ability to select for rigged models and the ability to sort by poly count, pricing, and even by discounts. Based on our search, CGTrader has around 1,500 rigged models to choose from, making it one of the largest repositories on our list.
As is the case with other sites, many human character models can be found as well as rigged vehicles and animals. Pricing is much higher than other sites with models listed as high as $800. However, there are plenty of free and low cost (~$2) models as well for those not made of money, though you do get what you pay for.
ArtStation has some extremely professional-looking rigged models. As a place for designers to post their models for purchase, ArtStation is a great place to find rigged models.
Due to the nature of the site, many of these artists are simply displaying their models and may not be selling them directly unless contacted, but it’s worth taking a look as there are many that are selling digital work. There are over 10,000 results when searching “rigged”, but again, not every one of these models is available for purchase.
Pricing tends to be on the higher end, though, as these models are from people who want to sell their designs to professional game designers and movie makers. However, pricing varies greatly depending on the artist and what they’ve designed; we’ve found several that are around the $100 mark.
Note that searching is based around finding artists, rather than finding models, which makes a lot of sense considering the purpose of the site.
3DExport also has many rigged models to choose from, with over 6,000. Of that, more than 150 are free. In general, the models don’t match the professional quality of some other sites on this list, but the large selection and relatively low cost of models (such as this rigged woman for only $5) make 3DExport a good contender.
There are also more expensive, higher-quality models such as this Iron Man for $179. One of the nice search features is the ability to filter the rigged category by subcategories such as gender and type of model. Additionally, you can view the items in a grid or list to see more items at once.
Finally, you can search by comments, which might be helpful if you’re trying to find a model with an active discussion for help. This can greatly reduce your time searching if you’re looking for something specific. It should be noted that there are quite a few unclothed models as well, if you’re looking for a blank canvas to start from.
Sketchfab is a popular site for finding 3D models, however, rigged models can be found on the site as well. Unfortunately, the search functionality is pretty limited in that you can only search for “rigged” models in the search bar. This brings up fairly confusing results, including things like oil rigs, which might not be what you’re looking for!
However, Sketchfab does have a tab for animated models that can narrow down your search if they’ve been listed that way. Additionally, searching “rigged” within collections gives you several specific collections of rigged models.
Nevertheless, Sketchfab has a fairly substantial number of models. It’s hard to tell exactly how many of them are rigged, though there seem to be quite a few based on our searching. Conveniently, Sketchfab has a lot of high-quality models that vary from Sonic the Hedgehog to this Spot the dog robot. However, pricing is complicated.
Unlike many other websites, Sketchfab doesn’t list the pricing unless you click into a model. This isn’t ideal if you want to filter models by cost, as your search results will include free models alongside models that are $150 or more with no way to tell the difference.
Cults is usually thought of as a site for finding 3D printable models rather than rigged models. When it comes to rigged models, however, Cults has a pretty decent selection (142 results tagged “rigged” at the time of writing). You can find several rigged models such as cute TV characters and dragons. Weirdly, there seem to be a lot of rigged eyeballs on Cults.
Pricing of models runs from free to around $50 per model depending on its complexity. In terms of the ability to find rigged models, Cults has typical search functionality for a 3D printing website, but it doesn’t have a specific collection for rigged models, so finding them can be difficult.
Free3D is a less well-known site that has a wide variety of rigged models, from the Hulkbuster to pigeons. Currently, Free3D has at least 355 rigged models ready for use.
Quality-wise, these models run the gamut from amateur to professional, and many of the professional-level models are free. There are also priced models that vary from $1-$50, with many of them being less than $20 for a single model.
Conveniently, there’s a rigged section for searching for just the rigged models, which is nice to get a general idea of what’s available. You can even find a rigged Bernie Sanders for free!
If you’re looking to find rigged female forms, Daz3D is a good place to start. There are around three times as many female rigged forms on the site as there are male forms. Overall, there are over 1,200 rigged models available on Daz3D. In terms of model quality, these tend to be high-quality human-form rigged models.
For pricing, it can vary from as little as $2.50 to almost $200, although, the higher-priced offerings tend to be multiple models. For the search criteria, Daz3D offers you the ability to sort models by artist, genre, and figure, helping to narrow down to the exact models you want.
Although this site contains fewer models than some others on this list, Renderosity still features over 500 models when rigged models are searched. However, like some of the other less-sophisticated search sites, you do get big rigs coming up in your search. Conveniently, in this case, the rig is also rigged! Models range in price but can be as high as $150, with the majority less than $50.
Model quality varies from mid-range to professional-quality models. You can find lots of different models such as bugs, dinosaurs, and soldiers to use. Like Daz3D, Renderosity has a few search functions that allow you to sort your searches quite nicely, such as gender, genre, vendor, figure, and price. These sorting categories will definitely help when you’re trying to find what you need for your next project.
If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, you can always use their old search method which allows you to use checkboxes for items you want to see.
Another top contender on our list is TurboSquid. It has just under 700 rigged models, with some great characters like the teenage mutant ninja turtles. Rigged models on TurboSquid tend to be extremely high quality, to the point of even having rigged 3D printers where you can upload your own 3D model to be rendered as being printed by the MakerBot in the rigged model. Very meta!
Pricing is a different story, however. Models on TurboSquid tend to be quite pricey in order to account for the quality. Many of the models cost over $100 each, but you can find some models in the $10-50 range. For finding rigged models, there’s a rigged category that makes browsing easy. And as for special features, TurboSquid has the ability to filter models by polycount, which can be useful if you’re trying to find models that are quick to load and work with.
As the name implies, Renderpeople is going to have rigged models exclusively of people. The site’s selection contains over 600 models ready for posing.
Unlike the previous sites, Renderpeople doesn’t have non-human or character models, but it does allow you extreme flexibility in searching for human models, even allowing you to find characters by ethnicity, clothing, gender, and location (where they would normally be found).
The models themselves are quite decent, professional models. Despite the niche, Renderpeople does cost quite a bit of money per model. They are $99 each, but there are discounts for buying multiple models at once.
As a bonus, we’ve included Mixamo. In terms of selection, it’s somewhat limited with less than 150 models, but everything is free which is perfect if you’re looking to save some money. The biggest draw for Mixamo is its auto-rigging character capability which can allow you to upload your own unrigged models to turn them into fully rigged and useable models.
Unfortunately, owing to the free and live 3D showing of the selected model, the site is somewhat slow and is difficult to search through beyond a basic search bar. Nevertheless, we won’t argue with free!
