Wondering what to do today? Here’s a suggestion…

  1. Listen to The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There for You” and dance awkwardly like Chandler.
  2. 3D print the peephole frame from Monica’s apartment.
  3. Hang the frame and take a photo of it, like Rachel would.
  4. Correct the frame’s alignment, in a very Ross-like manner.
  5. Have a sandwich, like Joey.
  6. Take a page out of Phoebe’s book, and enjoy it all.

Is this too much Friends? We don’t think so. How could it be? Especially when this peephole frame is so easy to print, adds a unique touch to your door, and is just plain fun? Could we be any cooler?

Printing Tips

“I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?” No? Well, let’s see if the following counts as advice, then.

While the original from the show is in a sharper yellow, we opted for Polymaker’s PolyTerra PLA, Banana shade. No, we weren’t feeling snackish when we chose it – we just thought it’d look nice. We weren’t wrong.

Print settings on Bambu Lab’s Bambu Studio, after choosing the P1P as the printer, included the default 0.12mm High Quality profile, with infill increased to 20%, and no supports. We did scale the design a bit, because the “lower poly” version was still way too big, both for the printer and for the door. With “uniform scale” checked, the X value was scaled down to 170 mm.

And to be perfectly honest, the model doesn’t look 3D printed. Whether it’s the design, the filament of choice, the printing settings, or a combination of all, it’s simply come out great. And after it was created for the Thing of the Week, a team member requested another one as a gift for – you guessed it – a Friends fan. Sure, it’s a moo point in the grand scheme of things, but it points in a clear direction: The print’s a success.

Who’s the Creator?

Thingiverse maker Joaco3D has only shared two designs to the platform: The Friends peephole frame and a remix of Da Vinci’s Golden Horn Bridge. With the former shared in 2016 and the latter in 2017, it’s not that wrong to assume he may be working on a different project for the time-being. Yet you can support him by tipping him if you love the design and if you’ve added it to your home – that could help someone be motivated to rejoin the 3D designing and printing world. Unless he’s out there learning how to play the guitar and is preparing a great rendition of “Smelly Cat”?

Where Can I Download It?

At Thingiverse.

If you like what you see and cannot print it yourself because you and your 3D printer are on a break, check out Craftcloud or other 3D printing services.

And just because, a friendly poll:
