YouTuber Scott Yu-Jan is making waves online this week with a 3D-printed iPhone dock that draws inspiration from iconic German industrial designer Dieter Rams.

The idea came to Yu-Jan by way of Overwerk, a music producer and artist who created a prototype design of a dock for an iPhone in StandBy display mode, which gives users at-a-glance information on many of the phone’s most-used features, such as timers, clocks, and calendars.

Yu-Jan then printed the housing on a Bambu Lab A1 Mini (Bambu Lab sponsors the video). Refining touches to make the dock feel whole include adhesive silicone strips that act as “feet” to prevent slippage. Additionally, a MagSafe charger keeps the iPhone in place, and an Apple Watch charger serves as a charging station for AirPods. Plus, there’s a quick-release button that pops the iPhone out of the dock.

The end result is the iPhone DN 40 Dock: a “spiritual collaboration” between Yu-Jan, Overwerk, Apple’s famed former Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, and Rams – more specifically, Rams’ Braun DN 40 alarm clock. With an aesthetic would fit on both the shelves of an Apple Store and within the pages of a coffee-table art book. Yu Jan refers to it as “an object from an alternate universe”, one which seamlessly blends design and functionality in true industrial-design fashion.

STL files for the dock are available for free on Makerworld, should you be interested in creating one of your own. It’s only compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro, although those who are able to edit in Fusion can make use of the design’s project files to tweak it for use with other models.

Yu-Jan’s YouTube video (embedded above) is also well worth a watch, as it provides a bit more context regarding the dock’s design and creation, as well as the designers who inspired it.
