In 2014, 3Doodler introduced the first “pen that can draw in the air” on Kickstarter. This totally clicked with 26,400 backers, which brought the company $2.34 million in seed funding. A year later, when the novelty had worn off, the market got flooded with cheap (and mostly bad) Chinese clones.

Today, 3Doodler addresses a different target group with its new product. Designed for users as young as four years old, 3D Build & Play wants to bring 3D technology to growing and developing children.

Instead of a drawing in air, 3D Build & Play uses molds and a 3D pen with a crank. While following a specially written story, the little makers are encouraged to fill molds with the pen, remove the parts, and then build props for the story. The press release points out the benefits of “hands-on learning, three-dimensional thinking, fine motor skills development, and cognitive development.”

The material used is a low-heat (110 °F), BPA-free, non-toxic, biodegradable plastic.

3Doodler is introducing 3D Build & Play at the New York Toy Fair, but it can be pre-ordered now. The price for a set is $29.99 and the release is in Q2 2020.
