AnkerMake has announced two new features for its “Make It Real” 3D model creation platform.

The first, 3D Paint, automatically generates an STL based on a user-uploaded 2D image, which users can then print using up to six colors. Here, AnkerMake notes, “animation/cartoon style images” – as well as those with “simple colors, clear layers, and main body highlighting” – will yield the best results.

The second feature, CityPrint, will allow users to select a portion of a map from one of seven “iconic” cities – Tokyo, Berlin, Hamburg, London, Venice, Paris, Chicago, or New York – then generate an STL of a section of that city’s skyline. This looks pretty cool. It may also mark the first time someone has called Hamburg “iconic”. So good job, Hamburg.

In all, the new features serve as novel additions to the Make It Real platform, which was introduced in August. The platform houses a search engine “database” of 3D models compiled from various repositories around the internet, as well as an official model library that is “curated by AnkerMake designers”.

At the time of its release, AnkerMake also promised the imminent introduction of modeling tools that would help users more easily customize and generate models. Details were kept under wraps, but when we reached out, an AnkerMake rep seemed to confirm that CityPrint and 3D Paint fall under that umbrella, and that other tools “won’t be long” in their arrival – pointing news-hungry users toward AnkerMake’s Discord community for forthcoming updates.

For the full write-up on Make It Real’s 3D Paint and CityPrint features, check out AnkerMake’s blog post. You can also check out the post introducing the platform itself, which dives a bit more into its specifics – and also teases a forthcoming 2.0 update to Make It Real that would include a “user upload feature”, ostensibly enabling platform-wide model sharing.
