Anycubic’s next generation of 3D printer has been the subject of much teasing over the last few weeks, with literal veils to un and warm-up pages on the company’s new-look website primarily showing off its collab with Pantone to offer a set of exclusive filament colors.
Guessing the Kobra 3 Combo’s (that is to say, Kobra 3 3D printer and ACE Pro multi-filament unit bundled together) early-bird price was also part of the preamble, but we now know this to be $449 – $100 off the apparent MRSP of $549.
To sweeten the deal, Anycubic also bundles some “gift” freebies for some of those early purchases, including a 1 kg spool from the company’s new range of exclusive Pantone filaments, a “mystery box” project file of some kind, a camera unit that’s limited to 5,000 units, and “abundant” multicolor models, available to all.
Anycubic’s “global live unboxing” live stream, beset with audio issues and awkward cutaways, featured no unboxing, nor gave any insightful closeup of the printers in action. It also featured a Q+A lasting just two minutes plus change from its hour-plus runtime. Of the four questions put to Anycubic co-founder James Ouyang, the only useful tidbits of information to drop were that the new Kobra 3 Combo will ship “late June, or early July,” and that the machine’s KobraOS firmware will be open sourced after the printers begin shipping. It’s not clear if this firmware is proprietary or a Klipper-derived firmware as we’ve seen with Creality’s newer machines.
The question of whether the ACE Pro unit will be backward compatible with other Kobra machines remains unanswered. We’ve put this, and similar questions to Anycubic in the hope of answering where the damp squib of a live stream has not, but our view is that it’s unlikely, from the perspective that it wouldn’t be helpful to Anycubic’s bottom line to disincentivize folks from picking up the Kobra 3.
To cap things off, a giveaway software used to pull winners of the new printer bundle flashed contest entrant email addresses prominently onscreen, suggesting that lessons about data protection at Anycubic have not been learned.
Priced at $449, the Anycubic Kobra 3 Combo is available now on the Anycubic webstore. Likewise, the standalone Kobra 3 3D printer can be picked up for $339, and ACE Pro as a standalone unit for $289.
