Bambu Lab has unveiled MakerWorld, “a collaborative 3D model platform that bridges model creators, users, filament vendors, and printers.”

The platform looks to take things a step further than popular repositories like Printables, offering not only printable files but also tips for slicing, filament presets, printing settings, and related knowledge “from experts who possess a profound understanding” of 3D printing.

Users of MakerWorld, Bambu Lab says, can download models and enjoy a “streamlined” printing experience by using slicing profiles, filament parameters, and print settings that will be displayed on the same page. All of this is “united” within Bambu Lab’s slicing software, Bambu Studio, with users able to print models with tailored print settings from MakerWorld in a “single click”.

Bambu Lab also says creators can rest easy, expressing its commitment to protecting intellectual property, with all models on MakerWorld requiring “proper attribution” by way of an original link and the name of the original creator – even those with a Creative Commons license. Creators can also upload slicing profiles in 3MF format.

When it comes to filament, MakerWorld will take “an open-system approach”, under which anyone can upload filament-specific parameters. Although this feature is still under development, Bambu Lab says it will eventually allow for the community to discuss and rate these parameters.

The MakerWorld community as a whole will be eligible for rewards under the MakerReward system, which will offer points for “every interaction” with the platform. MakerWorld members can redeem those points for “unique models, sought-after filaments, coveted gift cards, and even printers.”

Speaking of the MakerWorld community: the doors will be open to those using printers from other OEMs. There will be more information about this closer to MakerWorld’s official release, Bambu Lab says.

An exact date for that release is not provided in MakerWorld’s announcement blog post. However, Bambu Lab says it has already started recruiting users on social media to take part in the closed beta, ahead of the platform entering open beta in “several weeks” – so it seems the wait won’t be too long.
