Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the air rushing out of the balloon of expectation for Bambu Lab’s long-awaited next machine.

While we had it confirmed at the Rapid + TCT show that Bambu Lab’s new, bigger, next-generation machine would be coming in 2024, the company has just issued a press statement that revises this timeline to “early 2025.”

In it, Bambu Lab co-founder and CEO Dr. Tao explains: “We’re building something that’s going to push the boundaries of what’s possible in consumer 3D printing. This extra time ensures we deliver on that promise, with a product that’s fully ready and supported worldwide.”

Other reasons given in the statement include the company taking the time to ensure “global readiness” so that customers have a “smooth experience from day one.” This is in reference to the stocking of machines, spare parts, and the necessary logistics to go with this.

While the delay will come as a disappointment for those expecting to see something new and exciting from Bambu Lab, the announcement gave further shape to the much-speculated-on machine.

Chiefly, the company firmly places it above the X1 in terms of positioning, with the statement explaining: “This new series is aimed at prosumers demanding top-tier performance and innovation in 3D printing. It’ll sit above our current X1 Series, bringing some exciting new technology to the table.”

This adds to what we already know: that the new machine (machines?) will be larger than the company’s existing lineup of 3D printers.

The announcement comes close to two months after Stratasys filed legal proceedings against Bambu Lab for patent infringement. While that process is ongoing and expected to take a long time to wrap up, it’d be easy to imagine a link between the two. In the scheme of things though, a delay like this isn’t unusual. In recent times we’ve seen Prusa delay the Prusa XL, Peopoly its Magneto X, and just last week Phrozen delayed its Arco 3D printer, too.
