Bambu Lab has launched a Patreon-like “Commercial License Membership” set to run alongside its popular 3D model repository MakerWorld.
The membership will allow makers to purchase print files of models that can be printed and sold. All creators on the platform will be vetted (one requirement is 200 followers and 600 prints on MakerWorld, although “well-established creators from other platforms” are also eligible) and will set their own monthly subscription prices, which can range from $3-300.
Overall, the system looks similar to Printables’ subscription service launched in 2023, but with a commercial focus – which could make it an interesting resource when the EU’s new right-to-repair laws come into effect.
A helper tool will help creators fine-tune the parameters of licensing terms, such as attribution and adaption requirements. All payments will be made via PayPal, with Bambu Lab taking a 10% cut as a “platform fee”.
Bambu Lab says the membership program does not serve as a replacement for MakerWorld, which will remain open and paywall-free “for the time being”. Check out Bambu Lab’s blog post and a helpful FAQ for makers and creators for all the details.
