After months of unavailability due to a recall (catch up on that whole story with our explainer), the quick and slick Bambu Lab A1 3D printer is back in stock and available globally.
It’s not often we see product recalls in the 3D printing world. There have been plenty of post-launch design tweaks and user-printable aids pushed out for owners to address design deficiencies, but nothing like what Bambu Lab embarked upon to address safety concerns with the A1.
The A1’s redesign centered around its heatbed cable, which is now a beefed-up unit that is, according to Bambu Lab’s accelerated testing scheme, capable of withstanding millions of movements.
A couple of months out can be a long time in 3D printing, though, and there have been plenty of product announcements since to draw attention away from Bambu Lab’s machine, including both the multicolor-capable Creality K2 Plus and the also-multicolor-capable Anycubic Kobra 3.
Despite the looming competition, we still like the A1 for just how comprehensively good it is. It sounds stupid, saying that aloud – “comprehensively good” – it obviously wasn’t comprehensively good before if the heatbed cable posed a safety risk. Hyuk hyuk. Good point.
What we mean to say is that in nearly all matters of interacting and using the printer, the A1 is it. The print quality is fab with generally no effort required on your part. A guided setup wizard leads you through your first startup, and everything about its calibration is handled automatically for you.
It offers a thoroughly modern printing experience, free of the need to have to troubleshoot or tinker that has been rife (whether or not you wanted it – we know some prefer this aspect of the hobby) with many printers of the last five years. Sensors all over the printer catch issues, and if you find that you do have to go deeper, Bambu Lab fills in the blanks with a troubleshooting Wiki and AI chatbot support, among other avenues of support.
Something the A1 handles better than other printers is toolless nozzle changes. The A1 uses inexpensive nozzle/hot end assemblies from Bambu Lab itself that slot into the print head for fast size and capability changes with no risk to the printer’s other components. These nozzle modules are interchangeable with the company’s A1 Mini printer, too.
And then, for filament flexibility, there’s AMS Lite compatibility, which ups its printable materials count to four spools of filament for multicolor printing in a single print job.
It’s good to see the A1 back.
The Bambu Lab A1 and Bambu Lab A1 + AMS Lite bundles are available through the Bambu Lab store, with most locations shipping immediately.
