Bambu Lab has revealed the first of five expected H2D teaser images leading up to the 3D printer’s full reveal on March 25. This being an X-ray rendering of a print head.
There are a couple of things to unpack, but what really sticks out to us is the resemblance to the hot end quick swap mechanism present on the A1 series.
Just above the hot ends, you can see two clips over what appear to be dual nozzles (supporting earlier leaks that suggested the H2D would be a dual-nozzle system). Those clips look a lot like the one-clip quick-swap system present in Bambu Lab’s A1 Series of 3D printers. It was a notable feature that we highlighted in our review of the A1 Mini and remains one of our favorite nozzle swap systems.
The benefits of being able to quickly manage a clog or change nozzle sizes really can’t be understated.
This is also a deeper look at what could be a unique hot end switching mechanism. In the print head, we can see a single extruder gear with two idlers on either side attached to two arms that appear to use a spring-tension mechanism.
Those arms and the print heads also look like they could be misaligned, as did Bambu Lab’s first teaser image announcing the March 25 H2D reveal. Given the misalignment and additional gearing off to the left of the new image, the hot ends may be unfixed with an alignment mechanism within the print head that skirts the need to align two fixed hot ends on the build plate – a sometimes tricky calibration with dual-nozzle and IDEX 3D printers.
Going off the rendering, we can’t say anything for sure, but there’s a striking resemblance to a 2022 patent image that has been floating around and attributed to Bambu Lab for some time – especially on the company’s forums.
That patent is assigned to “Shanghai Outline Technology Co ltd” which, importantly, we have not confirmed to be Bambu Lab. The company’s usual trade name is Shenzhen Tuozhu. That said, there’s an undeniable resemblance between the patent and the H2D teaser image, so making the connection is low-hanging speculation at this point.
We’ll know more in the coming days, as Bambu Lab releases more teasers and fully reveals the H2D on March 25.
