Bambu Lab released an update to its slicer software, Bambu Studio, yesterday, bringing it to version 1.9.4. The update addresses an issue that heavily impacted steep overhangs in previous versions, thereby improving overhang performance.
The issue garnered attention last week when YouTuber Robert Cowan claimed a lingering bug in the PrusaSlicer software that Bambu Studio is based on was responsible for Bambu Lab hardware’s poor overhang performance compared to Prusa Research’s new Original Prusa MK4S. The bug was also pointed out late last year by YouTuber Printing Perspective, and addressed by Prusa Research.
The bug makes slicers treat exterior overhang layers as bridging when it comes to printing speed, Cowan says, which results in exterior overhangs that print significantly faster than they ought to and negatively impact print quality. This despite the software correctly labeling the affected layers as an overhang wall.
In Bambu Studio 1.9.4, the slicer can now “Differentiate between bridge walls and 100% overhang non-bridging walls, and use different printing speeds to improve the print quality of the 100% overhang non-bridging walls”, Bambu Lab says in the update changelog.
Bambu Lab hasn’t confirmed it was Cowan’s video that brought the issue to the company’s attention, but the timing – and the use of Prusa’s Scandic Plate 75º overhang torture test in the update changelog – suggests as much.
