Bondtech has announced the INDX, a wireless toolchanger system that looks like a serious shakeup for those printing with multiple materials, colors, or nozzle diameters.

Set for a November 2025 launch (more specifically, during this year’s Formnext), the INDX uses a lone “smart” toolhead and multiple “thin passive tools” that require no hotend. Instead, the smart toolhead switches between the passive tools in as few as 12 seconds, Bondtech says, and could heat them in as few as four.

An FAQ section on Bondtech’s website gives further detail, explaining that the smart toolhead will be capable of automatically adjusting itself to varying materials, flow rates, and other print settings, with the tools themselves being “contactless and wireless”. Once released, Bondtech estimates the passive tools to cost around $35 each, and the smart toolhead to go for around $250. All components will be sold separately – although we’d assume there will be bundles, too.

This is undoubtedly exciting news for those looking for extra speed and efficiency when printing with multiple materials. It’s surprising news, as well, given the quiet nature of the INDX’s reveal (it was seemingly shadow-dropped March 21 on Bondtech’s YouTube channel).

Whether the INDX will work as advertised remains to be seen. As the system is still in development, we may be in for changes or design tweaks in the coming months.

That said, the ultra-curious and technologically inclined may want to sign up for Bondtech’s tester program to get their hands on the system early. You’ll find more info about that, as well as the INDX as a whole, on the Bondtech website.
