You can now purchase own-brand 3D printer filament from online retail giant, Amazon. The filament can be bought from AmazonBasics in the US and is being sold amongst household essentials.

It’s possible to buy PETG, PLA or ABS filament in a broad range of colors. A single spool will set you back $19.99 for 1kg, while a multipack of five will cost $79.99. However, this price does not include shipping.

The dedicated Amazon page for PETG explains that the filament has 1.75 mm diameter + / – .05 mm. Each spool includes a built-in gauge, which shows both the percentage of material remaining and the approximate length remaining. Also, the recommended printing temperature is printed on each spool.

The product page also promises easy bed adhesion, stiffness, less jamming and a glossy type finish. With the filament comes a resealable storage bag to protect it between uses and a one-year warranty.

This Isn’t Amazon’s First Foray into 3D Printing

The filament is currently up for preorder only, the 3D printing materials will be shipped on August 30, 2018 earliest

But, current reviews on Amazon suggest that perhaps the filament is worth the wait. Currently, the PETG filament scores 4.8 out of five with comments from Vine Voice reviewers. (These are people in Amazon’s invitation-only program who write reviews in exchange for pre-releases.)

Nerd Alert, a Top 1000 reviewer, states: “First, I want to specify that AmazonBasics is a surprisingly good brand for filament, and that includes PETG. It comes vacuum sealed with a desiccant pack and shows no signs of moisture damage, with silky prints. The spools are high quality, marked well, and wound properly. I have yet to have any issues.”

This own-brand filament comes five years after Amazon introduced 3D printing to its platform. The site launched a 3D Printers and Supplies store in 2013 where you could buy consumer-grade products.

However, as well as this, the company has reportedly been working on research and development projects concerning 3D printing. Find out more about Amazon’s 3D printing projects on All3DP.
