Backing a project on Kickstarter is a bit of a gamble. But every now and then something enormously tempting comes along. Something like the Cerambot Eazao. Dice at the ready?

What the Eazao offers is rare – the ability to 3D print porcelain or clay. The Eazao’s proposed print area of 150 x 150 x 240 mm isn’t huge, but is hardly tiny either, and gives enough space to print some fairly well-sized objects. Think coffee mugs, small plant pots, and vases. That kind of thing.

This is Cerambot’s second kickstarted ceramic 3D printer. (The Eazao has already blasted past its $10,000 target.) The original Cerambot was a delta printer, but the company has now switched to a cartesian design for the Eazao, claiming it more stable and faster than the previous machine.

Getting a bit cluttered in here (Source: Cerambot)

Anyone who knows anything about pottery will know that you’ll need some sort of kiln to really finish your work off, and this is where it gets really interesting. Cerambot will provide (either as part of some Kickstarter pledge levels or as an extra) a microwave kiln, allowing you to “fire” your finished prints in your very own microwave oven.

It seems you will need a relatively beefy oven to do this, Cerambot has been testing the kiln in 1500 W microwaves for 35 minutes to achieve results, but from what the company is saying it is a reliable way to fire and apply glaze to your prints. With a cylindrical internal volume of 80Ø x 100 mm, you won’t be printing your own dinner plates, but mugs and small bowls are certainly on the cards here. Just be careful when using it, the temperatures inside the kiln are quite literally hotter than lava. Gulp.

At the time of writing, there’s little over a week left of the campaign. Cerambot offers the Eazao and kiln for a $519 pledge, with varying levels on either side of this giving a little more or a little less. Ceramic 3D printers aren’t the most commonly spotted of beasts – it’s going to be interesting to see how the Eazao gets on.
