Creality has announced the April 2 release of a compact, “pocket” 3D scanner. The CR-Scan Ferret weighs in at a scant 105 g – about as much as an orange – undoubtedly an appealing idea (yes, it’s a pun) for those looking to scan on the go.

The CR-Scan Ferret features two scanning modes: high accuracy, with up to 0.1 mm accuracy and 0.16 mm 3D resolution, is suitable for small- and medium-sized targets; and wide-range, which is capable of capturing a 560 x 820 mm area in a single scan, making it a good choice for larger objects. The scanner also utilizes automatic visual tracking, rather than relying on markers, which is a big plus in terms of usability.

An included tripod stand enables the scanner to be conveniently placed on a desktop or other flat surface, while a selfie-stick-like mount allows users to attach it to their phone and scan one-handed. It can be powered by a 5V power bank, laptop, or Android mobile device via USB-C connection.

As far as hardware goes, Creality claims the CR-Ferret’s built-in, high-resolution camera and “advanced optical technology” enables the device to be used even in bright sunlight to capture objects in their full-color glory. Internally, an ASIC chipset enables deep megapixel image processing at 60 frames per second and scanning at 30 frames per second.

Orders placed for the CR-Scan Ferret between April 2 and April 9 will qualify buyers for an early-bird price of $299 – a nice discount on its expected $349 MSRP. For full specs, check out Creality’s website.
