To celebrate this year’s Star Wars Day (May the 4th, for the uninitiated) and leading to the upcoming Star Wars Original Series, “The Acolyte”, Autodesk has launched the Design a Droid contest, with grand prize winners receiving expenses-paid trips to Lucasfilm and Disney Studios, where their designs will be on display.

The contest is inspired by the new series’ handheld droid, Pip, designed by Academy Award-winning visual effects artist, Neal Scanlan, who also worked on the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

There are two “skill level” categories open to content entrants: general (Jedi Master) and student (Padawan). However, everyone must be age 18 or above and reside in the US to enter. Student category entrants will also be eligible to win the general category.

Entrants will submit their designs in either the “mechanical” or “animated” category, using Autodesk Fusion for the former, or Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3ds Max for the latter. The designs will be judged on four, equally weighted criteria, including Autodesk technical ability, creativity, Star Wars relevance, and presentation quality – which encompasses both aesthetics and design functionality.

All designs must include assets from at least one of the Alphabet, Images, or Symbols libraries in Autodesk, but nothing third-party or downloadable is allowed. Entrants should also steer clear of incorporating “depictions of violent acts or weaponry” into their droids, which means they should lean more toward C-3PO or R2-D2 than, say, a Droideka.

Grand prize-winning designers in the general category will have their droids fabricated and displayed at Lucasfilm (for mechanical designs) or digitally showcased at Disney Studios (for animated). They’ll also receive airfare, hotels, and VIP tours of one of the locations.

Student category winners get a “virtual mentorship session” on Zoom with a “Lucasfilm Marketing or Creative executive”, a 3D printed version of their droid, some Star Wars swag, and a $500 Visa gift card.

The contest runs from today until June 4, the day of The Acolyte’s two-episode premiere on Disney+. To enter, check out Autodesk’s dedicated contest page, where you can find a full list of rules, eligibility requirements, and other related details.
