E3D has announced plans to discontinue its popular ToolChanger and Motion System. The move comes as part of a “strategic realignment” that will see the company placing its focus on FDM extrusion systems, according to an email sent to customers earlier today.

Spare parts for the ToolChanger will be available while stock lasts, E3D says. The OEM will also continue to sell blank tool plates “for the foreseeable future”. Additionally, all ToolChanger files will remain available to users, in an effort to solidify the company’s commitment to open source.

The announcement isn’t necessarily a surprise; rumors of the ToolChanger’s discontinuation have been swirling for months. Nevertheless, now it’s official, leaving behind a rather iconic legacy. Since its release in March 2020, the product has been featured on Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel, served as a staple in DIY 3D printers for thousands of creators around the world, and essentially founded a market, potentially inspiring multitool systems such as the PrusaXL and Makertech Proforge 4.

A full write-up of the E3D Toolchanger’s end of life is now up on the manufacturer’s website, where you can also grab “one of the last-ever” ToolChanger and Motion Systems. We’re not crying, you’re crying.
