Elegoo’s first foray into studio-size 3D printing is finally ready. The OrangeStorm Giga, an 800 x 800 x 1,000 mm print volume behemoth of a 3D printer, can now be preordered for ~$2,500 real monies from Elegoo’s web store, turning the page on a turbulent chapter in the device’s release.
Successfully Kickstarted late in 2023, the Giga promised larger-than-life 3D printing for a pretty radical price point, with some campaign backers backing as little as $1,250 in return for a printer. A small group of units, sent soon after to prominent 3D printing figures on social media, showed the Giga as far from ready, with units gouging themselves to pieces and suboptimal firmware generally making for a miserable time of using it.
All3DP was sent one, too, and seeing that it’d be a long time before the Giga would get its release, we tarped ours up and waited for the fixes to roll out. We’ll be putting out some content featuring our unit in the not-too-distant future – subscribe to our newsletter if you don’t want to miss it.
Fast forward to today, and the Giga is ready for preorder, for a still pretty cool ~$2,500.
At a glance, you get that huge build area, Klipper firmware with a 10-inch tablet-like display, Wi-Fi connectivity, four-zone bed heating, a filament runout sensor (you’d hope so for a printer this large), and a 300 °C hot end with a long melt zone for higher flow. It is somewhat basic, without too much provision given for it being an oversized 3D printer – mesh bed leveling across its entire 800 x 800 mm build area takes a long time to map out, and there’s a lack of print success systems to catch a failed print in progress.
Other need-to-know information about the Giga: it’s big and heavy. No duh. You’ll need in the region of 1224 x 1520 x 1570 mm of space to accommodate it. And a friend or acquaintance to help assemble it from the 145 kg of two huge packages it arrives in. You can also upgrade it to carry four printheads. While these printheads can’t move independently, they can print out four identical models in parallel.
Printing bigger, of course, scales the consumables you’ll need, meaning more material and time. Expect to be using, at the very least, 5 kg+ sized spools to achieve anything remotely big on the Giga (without having to baby the thing and manually change a spool every couple of hours).
The Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga is available for preorder today, with, at the time of writing, shipping estimated to commence in November.
