A new resin 3D printer is generating quite a bit of interest on Kickstarter. In less than a day, the Emake3D Galaxy 1 has raised more than $600,000 of its $20,000 goal, with another month of the campaign still to go.
Emake3D’s Galaxy 1 is a large-format SLA 3D printer that physically moves its laser along the X-axis, firing it into a galvo for the Y-axis. It seems conceptually similar to what Formlabs does nowadays with its motion-assisted SLA systems.
The campaign page for the Galaxy 1 states it will feature a 17-inch printing area and a build volume of 400 x 200 x 400 mm, with an XY resolution of 25 microns and a layer thickness of 25-200 microns. Also intriguing about the Galaxy 1 is its permanent leveling system, which allows users to skirt the unattractive task of adjusting the panel mid-print – and in doing so, solving one of the significant frustrations of resin 3D printing.

The printer’s laser module, Emake3D says, boasts a lifespan of 20,000 hours and can be upgraded with a “350 uw” module – which the OEM claims will increase printing speed by 30% – for an extra $508. An automatic resin tank with a swappable cartridge system enables quick material switching.
Meanwhile, a built-in temperature control system, air purifier, and seven-inch touchscreen ramp up the Galaxy 1’s user-friendliness. Software-wise, the machine is stated to support “commonly used modeling and slicing software,” including PrusaSlicer and Lychee Slicer.
Of course, our usual Kickstarter warning applies – perhaps doubly so given this campaign’s low threshold – don’t stump up money you can’t afford to lose. You’re paying to be a beta tester and have no protection for the money pledged should a campaign hit the rocks.
Emake3D’s Galaxy 1 has a projected May 2023 delivery date. Super early-bird packages for the EMake3D Galaxy 1 started at $1,299 but have sold out. The best you can do now is pledge $1,550 for the early-bird package or $1,750 for the Kickstarter special. Visit the Galaxy 1 Kickstarter campaign page for full specs and info.
