Epic Games has announced Fab, a metaverse-focused marketplace on which Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, Unreal Engine Marketplace, and Quixel will be housed under one digital roof.

The move follows Epic Games’ acquisitions of Sketchfab and ArtStation in 2021, and of Quixel back in 2019, and could make things easier for designers and consumers to access what will now be a very large, unified library of digital assets to “build the metaverse together,” says a Sketchfab blog post.

Fab will launch later this year with Sketchfab acting as a “foundational pillar”, still offering the same 3D viewing, editing, and sharing capabilities as it does in its current form. Epic Games also promises that Fab will be an “open marketplace for a broad range of tools, game engines and metaverse platforms, not just Unreal Engine and Fortnite” with expanded payment options for both buyers and sellers, as well as free content.

Fab’s alpha version is currently available as a plugin within Unreal Editor for Fortnite, with digital assets curated specifically for the game. As the marketplace develops, however, creators will be able to self-publish their work – as well as manage digital assets and collaborate on teams – receiving the same 88% revenue share currently offered by Sketchfab.
