Epic Games’ new digital marketplace, Fab, will launch in mid-October, the company revealed yesterday in a blog post.
Fab was announced in March of last year. It will serve as a cross-industry platform, consolidating Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, and Quixel. Its launch will mark the end of Unreal Engine Marketplace.
Fab will offer users quite a bit, including 3D and 2D models, a real-time 3D model viewer, compatibility with platforms and tools including Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, Maya, and more – a list that Epic Games’ says will continue to grow.
The platform is designed to be creator-focused, with an 88/12 revenue sharing model that aims to help them “build real, sustainable businesses”. Tools like tiered license pricing will help that along – as will a launch promotion that offers a 100% revenue share until the end of 2024.
A pledge to AI transparency is of note here, too. Fab creators will be able to choose if their products can be used to train AI models, for example, and must state if they used AI to create their offerings.
A new, comprehensive platform like Fab means, unsurprisingly, that users must migrate. For Sketchfab in particular – the offering with perhaps the most relevancy to those in the 3D printing world – this means all licensable content will move to Fab. The Sketchfab Store will no longer be available. Epic says it has plans to release a tool in early October to help sellers move their products to the new platform. Sketchfab.com and its sharing services and business solutions will remain open and supported.
Epic’s writeup of the Fab launch is a must-read, especially for sellers, as it also details full migration plans and timelines for Unreal Engine Marketplace, Quixel, and ArtStation.
