NonOilen3

For the last few years, Filamentum has been on a journey to bring to the market a 3D printing filament that’s as environmentally friendly as possible.

The result of this journey is, at long last, now available for all to enjoy in the form of Filamentum NonOilen. This exciting new product is the result of a collaboration between Filamentum and a team of expert researchers from the Slovak Technical University led by Prof. Ing. Pavol Alexy, PhD.

The end result is a filament that is 100% biodegradable after industrial handling, decomposing around three times as quickly as PLA. It is also stronger and tougher than PLA and can be used by most 3D printers, thanks to its low temperature requirements. NonOilen is also food safe and can be cleaned in a dishwasher as it possesses high temperature resistance, making it a material that can be reused over and over again.

One area you’ll see it put to use is in the automotive industry. Fremach, a major supplier of complex plastic parts for the industry, has been using NonOilen filament to produce parts for its production processes. Thanks to NonOilen’s properties and the fact it is entirely recyclable, it helps both Fremach and Filamentum play a part in the circular economy and contribute to less plastic waste.

NonOilen filament is made from a blend of polylactic acid and polyhydroxy butyrate (PLA/PHB). The latter works to improve both the toughness and temperature resistance of the PLA as well as acting as an enhancer for the material’s biodegradability. Additionally, NonOilen can be recycled multiple times (by sending it back to Filamentum) without losing its properties, meaning it can play a big role in reducing waste caused by 3D printing. Filamentum is even a member of DHL’s GoGreen program, so you can offset the CO2 produced from deliveries and returns.

Filamentum NonOilen is manufactured from 100% biological sources. When users have finished with NonOilen printed objects, Filamentum simply turns it into new spools of NonOilen. As it doesn’t lose any of its properties during the recycling process, this can be repeated time after time. In this regard, Filamentum NonOilen becomes a superb choice for businesses wanting to green prototype, ensuring that development of a new part or product does not result in unnecessary waste.

Filamentum NonOilen is available now, having been released on March 31 2021. It is available in 1.75 and 2.85 mm diameters, both priced around $50.
