Never one to sit still, Creality has given us some new tech to lust after this week with the softly launched Otter Lite 3D scanner.

The original Otter is a structured light scanner sitting in Creality’s mid-range, above the cheap and cheerful Ferret series, and below the company’s laser-based hybrid Raptor, which the company pushes as its metrology-grade system.

With the Otter Lite, there’s now a little nuance to the choice with similar attributes for peak accuracy (0.05 mm to the OG Otter’s 0.02 mm) and resolution (0.1 mm to the OG Otter’s 0.05 mm). The Otter Lite uses feature-based or marker tracking, capturing color data and, Creality claims, can even handle dark and metallic objects without the need for scanning sprays.

Other key differences of the Otter Lite include: a larger minimum scan volume, 20 x 20 x 20 mm to the Otter’s 10 x 10 x 10 mm; a large maximum single-frame capture window in long-range mode; out-of-the-box wireless scanning capability.

Indeed, the Otter Lite appears to be made for stuffing in a bag and scanning on the go. A battery-equipped pistol-grip handle that offers quick charging and is airplane-safe comes as standard to power the scanner. You can either attach your phone to the grip and work in the Creality Scan app (Android & iPhone) or stream the data via Wi-Fi 6 to a computer.

The Otter Lite is available to order now on the Creality webstore. It looks like the planned retail price is $759, but “early birds” can get it for $699.
