At the beginning of May, Make: magazine quietly brought its Makerspace Directory back into the spotlight, softly announcing its return via social media.

For those unfamiliar, Makerspace Directory is a user-curated directory of active makerspaces, fab-labs, and all other forms of communal places where groups can gather, share knowledge, materials, and tools, and get stuff made. It was launched in 2013 and, by the company’s own admission, was underutilized and languished in the years since.

Make:’s initial cleanup of the revamped domain has verified over 700 locations worldwide. These makerspaces can claim their entry to fill in missing details and add images and contact information. If your local makerspace isn’t represented, you can add it yourself by filling out a short questionnaire. According to a representative, the response has been positive; however “a lot of spaces were affected during the pandemic, so we are trying to jumpstart the directory with active outreach from our team.”

Things look set to grow and improve, too. They continue “We will be sending out a user survey in the upcoming weeks to registered spaces as a needs-finding exercise on increased functionality that would be valuable for spaces and users.”
