We print a lot with LCD resin printers and can unequivocally say that the whole process stinks. The resin stinks. Cleaning the resin stinks. The mess it makes stinks. The prints are stunning, though – like putting glasses on for the first time. And so you suffer through for the art the process can accomplish.
Aiming to take a little of the pain (or stench) out of the process is MatterHackers, which recently debuted a new Build Series material, MH Build Series Epoxy-Free resin . One of the company’s latest attempts at tickling budget makers’ tastebuds with low-cost materials, this new resin, according to MatterHackers, comes with a few advantages over similar resins.
For one, the company has opted for resealable, squeezable 500 g and 1 kg pouches which let you wring out every last drop. MH Build Series resin also comes in a few punkishly vibrant colors with some – ravers take note – showing a neon-like glow.
Developed in-house by MatterHackers, the new resin is epoxy free, relying instead on a methacrylate for its long-chain polymer forming. The material safety data sheet gives a little more information and the expected cautions for using such a material. Sciencey stuff aside, as a result of this proprietary concoction, the resin is said to be near odorless when compared to epoxy-based equivalents – possibly even less so than other low-odor resins.
We haven’t given it a sniff yet, so we can’t verify how odorless it is, but it certainly sounds impressive, especially when all of the above is pinned to a starting price of $16.99 for the 500 g bottle.
