PrintStones is a spin-off of the Vienna University of Technology focusing on developing 3D printing technologies to automate the construction of pavement and concrete slabs on the construction site.

So far, this startup has created a prototype mobile concrete 3D printer. The prototype can extrude concrete on the go as the 3D printer is attached to a robotic arm on wheels.

The startup believes that having a moving 3D printer on a construction site results in greater flexibility as well as savings in time and money. For example, costs for the installation of parts are drastically reduced, as is CO2 production.

PrintStones explains in a press release that the prototype 3D printer is particularly suitable for producing pressure-stressed components “in the civil engineering segment.”

PrintStones Prototype Prints Concrete On the Go

The PrintStones mobile printer can be used on the construction site to print various forms, colors, or surface texture. It currently has a printing speed of 15 centimeters per second. A press release explains: “The challenge lies in the optimization of the system parameter, as it is an interplay of machine components, environmental conditions, materials and 3D models.”

Researchers from the Vienna University of Technology were working on the development of simulation tools for stress and strain analysis when they came up with the PrintStones business idea.

As PrintStones is still a startup, it is looking for people to join its team, including a 3D Operator who will supervise and lead 3D printing operations. Visit the PrintStones website to learn more about the startup.
