Nike has debuted a pair of 3D printed sneakers that are almost fully 3D printed: the Air Max 1000.

Designed in collaboration with Zellerfeld – a Germany-based company that runs a made-to-order, 3D-printed footwear platform – the Air Max 1000 was officially unveiled and showcased at this year’s ComplexCon in Las Vegas. There, visitors had the chance to try them out, as well as win pairs of their own.

The shoe is a modernized take on the Air Max 1, which was first released in 1987 and introduced the visible, air-bubble-style cushion that has become iconic in Nike’s offerings. True to its roots, the Air Max 1000 still features that air bubble; in fact, it’s one of the only components of the shoe that isn’t 3D printed.

The Air Max 1000 is not Nike’s entry-point into the world of 3D printing. In 2018, it released the Vaporfly Elite Flyprint, which featured a 3D printed upper. Adidas also joined the party that year, when it launched the Futurecraft, a shoe which featured a 3D printed midsole.

While there’s no word on a release date or a price for the Air Max 1000, a quick look at Zellerfeld’s website shows that its shoes start at around $150 and head up rather quickly from there. It’s unclear how Nike will position the shoe, which of course will have an impact on both price and availability. And that’s if they are released at all – right now the sneakers are billed as “exclusive” and “available only at ComplexCon”. Keep an eye on Nike’s website for updates.
