If you’ve never worked a handheld 3D scanner before, the Peel 3D booth 954 at Rapid + TCT is a great opportunity to give one a spin.

Peel 3D offers a complete solution of hardware and software that is compatible with computer-aided design software, such as SolidWorks or Fusion. Peel 3D, the Creaform subsidiary, redesigned Peel 3 in Oct. 2023 to boast better accuracy than its predecessors and focus on improved usability through an ergonomic design, haptic feedback, and intuitive touchscreen capability, the company says.

All these improvements aim to simplify the scanning process for newbies and experienced veterans alike to achieve crisp, accurate scans. In fact, All3DP has named the Peel 3 the Value Pick in our Guide to the Best 3D Scanners in 2024.

Something unique among handheld 3D scanners, is the Peel 3’s multiple recognizable vibration patterns to guide you as you scan narrow and hard-to-reach places without a direct line-of-sight.

The scanner is also offered as a bundle with proprietary Peel 3D CAD software Peel 3.CAD version, which is specifically designed as a turnkey solution for reverse engineering applications.

In a recent case study on the Peel 3D website, the company outlines how an after-market automotive audio company used Peel 3D scanners and hardware from Creaform, for a job to install custom speakers on a Bugatti. Automotive Entertainment HB in  Huntington Beach, Calif., used to trace out equipment installation plans on cardboard and and use resin fiberglass before shifting their process towards 3D scanning and 3D printing their molds.

The  Bugatti project presented unique challenges, given the exclusivity of the Bugatti model (only 60 units worldwide) and the primary goal, which was to ensure that any modifications made were reversible, allowing the owner the option to sell the vehicle in its original factory form.

The work began by delicately removing the leather to expose the speaker pocket to be scanned. An original speaker grill could then be printed for the new housing based on the cross-sections and surfaces extracted from the 3D scan. Being able to replicate organic curvature easily with these surface extracts was another one of the key benefits from working with 3D scanning, the company says.

Make your way to the Peel 3D booth 954 by heading toward the Main Stage. It’s in the back corner near the SME Media Studio.
