Whether it’s monster trucks, meals, or 3D printers, the big stuff is almost always the best stuff. And with the recent reveal of the Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K, it feels like there are big reasons to be excited.
While it isn’t as large as the image above suggests with that pre-splashdown lake shot, but it’s still up there with the largest of desktop resin 3D printers, with a print volume of 330 x 185 x 400 mm. Phrozen claims it’s the largest mono LCD toting printer on the market, which might be true, but the Taiwanese firm has also dialed up the bigness by making the huge 15-inch panel underpinning the printing an 8K resolution monster, putting its pixels at 43-microns in the X- and Y- axes. Oh, my.
Build size like this isn’t hugely uncommon, and Phrozen has trodden this path before. The Phrozen Transform had the same Z-axis height of 400 mm, although its 290 x 160 mm X and Y aren’t quite as large. It goes without saying that that printer was slower, and didn’t have anything close to the resolution the company is offering in the Mega 8K.
Other big printers exist out there, of course. The new Peopoly Phenom Prime gets close to the print resolution but is some way off the build area of the Sonic Mega 8K, though it is considerably more expensive than our ol’ pal Sonic here.
All that bigness needs a strong level of support, of course. Phrozen has kitted out the Sonic Mega 8K with dual linear rails and a ball screw design. In theory, this should assist with the weight of some large prints and the stability they will inevitably require. The printer has an all-metal construction, too, something Phrozen says will ensure a highly stable structure and long-term usability.
Further convenience features can be found in twin cooling fans, full Chitubox integration, and a pre-calibrated, ready-to-go build plate you can manually alter later on if you want. The build plate features holes across it to improve adhesion, lessening the chances of a large, heavy print peeling off during the printing process.
So, when can you get your paws on one? Well, the printer is expected to ship to customers around mid-November 2021, so there’s a little wait to go. It could be they start arriving just before Christmas.
Jumping in now and pre-ordering should secure you one for a lower price than the $1,599 it should go on sale for later on, but keep in mind that shipping costs from Phrozen directly in Taiwan are likely to be extremely high, what with the size of this machine. The price you pay at the checkout could end up being considerably more than the printer’s list price.
