A box with a built-in dehumidifier might not strike you as the sort of thing that needs a lot of innovation, but Polymaker has gone and done it anyway. The PolyDryer, released just yesterday, introduces modularity with a simple sealed dry box and detachable active dryer base. It’s one of those things we just didn’t know we needed.
That’s the pitch. Let it sink in. At first glance, it may not seem like a huge change, but after some consideration, it really looks like the PolyDryer will make organizing and safely storing filament much simpler.
At ~$80 for the dryer dock and modular storage box, the PolyDryer is on the pricey side for filament dryers, but not by much. You can find comparable machines from the likes of Sunlu or Creality for about $50, but they’re less tempting as a long-term storage solution for multiple spools.
With the PolyDryer, the dock can be swapped between ~$30 storage boxes that are each fitted with desiccant storage and a humidity indicator. When you need to dry a spool, just pop the seals off the bottom and slot the dryer dock in – skirting the need to swap spools from an active dryer to another bin or sealed bag. It’s a decent convenience boost for the money.
But, it is still a decent chunk of change for single-spool storage. Makers with a large material collection aren’t likely to move their entire supply to the modular PolyDryer boxes. For those who keep just a few spools or for especially hygroscopic materials, however, it seems like a great, affordable solution.
Polymaker has also indicated on its product page that “printable add-ons” will be available for the PolyDryer, suggesting solutions “for hanging or connecting” the boxes. We expect to see those on Polymaker’s Printables brand page sometime soon.
Like any good dryer box, the PolyDryer has a sealable filament port for 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm materials. It’s also set up with a “central holder” to ensure smaller spool sizes fit but is capped at 1 kg spools. Polymaker says the PolyDryer’s seals are so effective that the dry box “inflated” during smoke tests. You’d think it’d just pop a seal.
Interestingly, Polymaker also says that it consulted its Discord users to brainstorm ideas for the PolyDryer two years ago, and makes a point of thanking contributors to the idea on its product page. Always nice to see a manufacturer listening to its community and giving credit where it’s due.
The PolyDryer is live on Polymaker’s web store, but its ~$80 dryer dock combo is already sold out. At least you can start slotting ~$30 storage boxes right now.
