During Rapid+TCT late last month, Polymaker announced two new product lines set to target the pro and consumer sides of the 3D printing materials industry in a more focused way: a colorful consumer-focused lineup called “Panchroma”, and professionally focused “Fiberon”.
“We saw two growing demands: one was colors for things like Bambu printers with AMS, Hue Forge, and everything that’s going on in surface finishing color. And the other direction is competent materials,” Polymaker Marketing Manager Luke Taylor told All3DP on the Rapid+TCT show floor. “And it’s not like one is business and one is consumer because a lot of consumers also need high-performance stuff.”
Panchroma, which Polymaker is touting as its “new aesthetic champion”, will boast 160 filaments at launch, varied in both color and finish. While most of the materials will simply be rebranded Polymaker materials, 34 will be brand new colours, gradients, and effects. And that’s just to start. Taylor says Polymaker is aiming to have 190 Panchroma materials by the end of the year, and beyond that is committed to adding a new color series to the Panchroma family every quarter for a total of four new color series’ a year.
Just because Panchroma is consumer-focused doesn’t mean Polymaker isn’t still thinking about business needs. It’s determined to ensure Panchroma’s color be not just varied, but also consistent throughout its offering.
“We have a five-step QC process where we’re measuring with a colorometer and checking that we retain the masterbatch ,” said Taylor. “Because a lot of people are printing for business, and when one spool runs out mid-print, you want to swap another one in and not see any change in color. That’s something we really, really commit to.”
So, there are a lot of materials to choose from in the Panchroma line, but customers may not need to worry about getting a sample of every spool to find the material that’s right for them. At Rapid+TCT, Polymaker showcased its upcoming web-based tool that produces high-quality renders locally – no uploads necessary. The tool lets users see their model in all the Panchroma filaments as a standard rendering or with raytracing. Polymaker expects the tool to be live by the end of the year.
Some of the materials under the Fiberon banner will be familiar if you’ve purchased from Polymaker in the past. Specialized filaments like the carbon-nanotube-filled ESD have simply been moved to the new name, but prices have been lowered to make the materials more accessible, Taylor said.
Fiberon isn’t just a rebranding, though. New materials have arrived, too,the most exciting of which might be PPS-CF. Taylor rang a large bell printed from the material, which chimed to nearly a metallic effect attributed to the material’s extreme stiffness.
Other early Fiberon materials include the more pedestrian PET-CF and PETG-rCF: a material with recycled carbon fibers from end-of-life wind turbine blades that costs just $20 per spool (with Fiberon materials coming in spools of either 500 grams or 2 kg). “This is really like the PLA of engineering materials,” Taylor said.
Customers can identify the percentage of carbon fiber in a Fiberon material by the numbers behind the material name, with blends tuned to be optimized for things like heat resistance or fast printing.
In addition to the new product lines, keen-eyed Polymaker users will also find the company’s recycled cardboard spools updated to include a rubber glue around the rims to prevent problematic dusting in closed settings like multi-material units.
