Bethesda has released files and instructions that allow users to print and assemble the Frontier, a starship from the recently released “Starfield” video game.
The Frontier is the first ship that players of the highly anticipated title receive, courtesy of the space exploration organization, Constellation. The model was previously shown on “Adam Savage’s Tested” YouTube channel, where an hour-long video documents the painstakingly detailed process of building and painting the spacecraft, which Bethesda used as a filming miniature.
Now, you can have a go at it yourself – albeit on a smaller scale. The model Savage created clocked in at 30 inches, but the files Bethesda has released are for a 12-inch model designed for resin 3D printers.
The build is by no means for beginners, requiring a great deal of assembly, gluing, sanding, and the optional addition of accentuating features such as brass rods for the ship’s Grav Drive. There’s also room to add lighting and landing gears. Painting is not a requirement but does go a long way toward making the Frontier aesthetically pleasing on a shelf or desk – although achieving the weathered, space-beaten appearance of Savage’s model will require near-expert skills.
It’s worth noting that Bethesda says that interested creators “may be able” to shrink the model to around 70%, but warns that this is an untested theory – and one that may result in parts becoming too thin or small to successfully print.
That said, the assembly instructions and parts list are extensive and detailed, so those prepared for a challenge should find themselves with all the resources they need to get started. Further helping them along is an additional “Tested” video that dives into the creation of the DIY model itself.
To download the files and instructions, check out this blog post on Bethesda’s website, where you’ll also find both aforementioned “Tested” videos. Oh, and when you’re finished, send us a pic of your model – we want to see what you’ve got.
