Yesterday, Prusa Research, the prominent Czech 3D printer manufacturer, released beta firmware for ESP-01 and ESP-01S modules that will finally make Original Prusa Mini and Mini+ 3D printers wirelessly network capable.
Once installed, the upgrade will allow users to control the 3D printers remotely via web browser using the PrusaLink software. PrusaLink was previously active but only allowed Mini and Mini+ users to see the status of their printers such as temperatures and speed. With this new ESP firmware release, it’s been updated to allow 3D printer control by managing stored G-code, and starting and stopping prints – even when using the previously available Ethernet connectivity.
The release finally fulfills a promise Prusa Research made on the Prusa Mini’s initial release in 2019 and was excitedly acknowledged during the company’s live stream. “Honestly, this is one of the most surprising projects in a way a minefield it was,” the company’s founder, Josef Prusa, said while expressing the project’s difficulty.
Interested users can find the software and very detailed documentation on Prusa Research’s GitHub, including a brief history of the project.
Correction 29/07/2022: A previous version of this article incorrectly referred to “Prusa Connect” as the web interface to remotely manage the Prusa Mini(+). However, this web interface is still PrusaLink. This correction is thanks to feedback from a kind reader.
