Yesterday, Prusa Research announced the release of its second SLA 3D printer, the Original Prusa SL1S Speed, via blog post. The new printer was live in the company’s online store when the blog was published and accompanied by a product video – which we share with you below.

Prusa says it has “touched up nearly all of the SL1’s main features” but highlights the new product’s speed at length. The company says the new monochrome LCD screen vastly improves UV light transmission, curing single layers in just 1.4 seconds. Combined with three-times faster tray tilting, which releases adhered layers and stirs resin, Prusa says the machine can print 150mm tall objects in just two hours at larger layer heights. A side-by-side comparison in the announcement video shows an object with a 0.05mm layer height printed on the SL1S Speed over twice as fast as Prusa’s original SL1.

The change comes at a cost, however. The SL1S Speed costs $1,999, $300 more than the SL1 it replaces and without the option to purchase a cheaper kit for DIY assembly – an unprecedented decision for the company. Prusa says the price increase was necessary given the new printer’s higher part costs and other supply issues. As with all of Prusa Research’s products, the SL1S Speed remains open source.

Still, the company clearly has its mind set on softening this price jump with affordability elsewhere. It has introduced savings elsewhere in the form of consumable hardware instead of cheaper self-assembly kits. The original SL1’s costly aluminum resin tank is gone for the SL1S Speed, replaced with a plastic PA6 tank that costs just $24.99. The new tanks come with an opaque lid that prevents resin curing and makes them easily stackable, so switching resins and cleaning will be much less of a task. On top of that, Prusa says that replacing the tanks’ non-proprietary FEP is easy and cheap, so even these new affordable tanks need not be consumable.

While speed is quite literally in the name, an array of other upgrades have also been included on the SL1S Speed. It features a 25% larger build volume, improved resolution, quick-release angled print platforms that maintain calibration, and much more. You can get a full list of what’s changed on Prusa’s blog or by following the product link below.

You can buy the SL1S Speed right now by itself or in a bundle with Prusa’s simultaneously improved wash and cure system – the CW1S.
