Raspberry Pi has released version 6.6 of Raspberry Pi OS, which sees the company’s devices support labwc, a Wayland compositor that should boost overall system performance.

Wayland is an application window management system that improves on X Window, which Linux desktops use to perform tasks like window management and mouse movement. However, whereas X draws windows via a two-step process – a display server and a windows manager – Wayland leverages a “compositor” to combine the two actions. Not only is this more efficient, it’s more secure, as applications are isolated and unable to observe one another.

While Wayland has been in use with Raspberry Pi devices since 2023, the labwc compositor is a new addition – and makes it easier for them to run Wayland. As a result – and as of the latest update – Wayland is now the default option on Raspberry Pi Desktop.

The update also brings a few additional features and improvements to various Raspberry Pi functionalities. There’s improved support for touchscreen-enabled devices, for example, that integrates a virtual keyboard, and “right-click and double-click equivalents for touch displays.”

Attention has also been paid to the remote access software Raspberry Pi Connect, with an icon now visible by default, making it simpler for users to activate or deactivate the functionality.

A new screen configurator tool and rewritten toolbar panel application round out the update, which can be downloaded via Linux package manager, apt, Raspberry Pi Imager, or Raspberry Pi’s software page.
