Capturing Reality has announced plans for a new pricing and licensing model that will see its RealityCapture photogrammetry software going free for students, educators, and hobbyists, as well as companies that earn less than $1 million in yearly revenue.
The new model will take effect with the release of RealityCapture 1.4 and Unreal Engine 5.4 in late April. While the standalone RealityCapture software will cost $1,250 USD per seat per year for organizations that exceed the revenue threshold, a new software package will also be offered. Called the Unreal Subscription, it brings together complimentary programs from Epic and its subsidiaries, including Unreal Engine, RealityCapture, and Twinmotion, for $1,850 USD per seat per year.
The new model replaces RealityCapture’s Pay-Per-Input (PPI) scheme, where users could process their data for free and then use credits to license it. It will only apply when RealityCapture is updated to version 1.4 or later. Perpetual licenses will also phase out. Those still holding perpetual licenses will receive 12 months of updates and then must agree to the new terms and either purchase a subscription or use it for free (should they meet the criteria for free use under the new model) to upgrade and see new features. Those with unused PPI credits will also have 12 months to use them.
The news will undoubtedly come as a happy surprise to many low-input users; we ranked RealityCapture as some of the best photogrammetry software, especially “among pros in surveying, architecture, cultural heritage documentation, virtual reality, and game development”.
There’s quite a bit of information regarding the new pricing and licensing model in a post on RealityCapture’s blog, so be sure to check that out for full details.
