Revopoint, at Rapid+TCT in Detroit, has revealed a 3D scanner capable of scanning large and featureless objects without markers. It’s called the Trackit “optical tracking 3D scanner” and it will be available to back on Kickstarter next month, the company says.
The Trackit pairs a large stationary optical unit with a handheld scanner in a marker-dot covered housing. The optical unit, which has a four-meter range, tracks the MetroX-like Trackit scanner unit, eliminating the need to mark objects directly, says Bella Hao, Revopoint’s social media manager, who is presenting the Trackit on the tradeshow floor with 3D scanning enthusiast and Revopoint contributor Jeff Lindstrom.
“Most 3D scanners you’ll put IMUs in there, but they still get lost on a large, smooth surface,” Lindstrom says. “With this, it won’t matter.”
The Trackit will be offered as a combo unit with the handheld scanner – existing MetroX users will not be able to use their current device, says Hao.
Trackit will have two scanning modes: a 30 blue laser cross-line mode for large surfaces and a single-laser mode to better capture fine details and crevices. Revopoint says the scans captured by the system are “high-fidelity scans ready for scan-to-CAD conversion or dimensional inspection”.
The optical base station can be repositioned using only three markers placed in the environment, allowing you to scan very large objects.
There’s no price for the Revopoint Trackit yet, but the company says Super Early Bird Kickstarter offers will be 35% off and is offering express shipping and an extended warranty for those who back with a $100 deposit. Those interested can sign up for campaign alerts on Revopoint’s website.
